Mearns Athletic F.C. was an association football club from Newton Mearns in Renfrewshire, active in the 1880s. History The club was formed in 1883; its first match was at home to Thornliebank in December, and, although it was a 6–2 defeat to a strong side, "for their first match they played very well". Its introduction to competitive football was remarkable; its first tie in the Renfrewshire Cup, in the first round of 1884–85, was the club's biggest win - a 13–0 drubbing of the senior Glenpatrick side. Reality bit in the second round, the Athletic losing 12–0 at home to Port Glasgow Athletic, the Port men apparently roused by the Athletic's refusal to switch the tie to Clune Park. The 1885–86 Scottish Cup was the 13th season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. Queen's Park won the competition for the eighth time after they beat defending champions Renton 3–1 in the final. Arbroath set a world record in the first round when they defeated Bon Accord 36–0 on 12 September 1885. The score remains a record in British senior football and globally for a match that was not fixed or thrown. Newton Mearns ( sco, The Mearns; gd, Baile Ùr na Maoirne ) is a suburban town and the largest settlement in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. It lies southwest of Glasgow City Centre on the main road to Ayrshire, above sea level. It has a population of approximately 26,993, stretching from Whitecraigs and Kirkhill in the northeast to Maidenhill in the southeast, to Westacres and Greenlaw in the west and Capelrig/Patterton in the northwest. It is part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Its name derives from being a new town of the Mearns (from Scottish Gaelic "a' Mhaoirne" meaning a stewartry).
