Meacham Lake
Meacham Lake is a lake eight miles north of Paul Smiths in Franklin County, New York in the Adirondack Park. It is long, north to south, and wide. The lake is found at an elevation of . Most of the lake is in the town of Duane; the southernmost shore is in the town of Brighton. The state purchased the most of the land around the lake in 1931-32, and it is a part of the Debar Mountain Wild Forest; motors are permitted on the lake. There is a campground operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at the north end of the lake. Fish include northern pike, yellow perch, and bullhead. Debar ( mk, Дебaр ; Albanian: ''Dibër''/''Dibra'' or ''Dibra e Madhe;'' ) is a city in the western part of North Macedonia, near the border with Albania, off the road from Struga to Gostivar. Franklin County is a county on the northern border of the U.S. state of New York. Paul Smiths, New York
Paul Smiths is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brighton in Franklin County, New York, United States. It is located on Lower Saint Regis Lake in the Adirondacks, northwest of Saranac Lake, located at 44°26' North 74°15' West. The population of the CDP was 671 at the 2010 census. History The hamlet was named after the Paul Smith's Hotel (formally known as the Saint Regis House), founded in 1859 by Apollos "Paul" Smith as one of the first wilderness resorts in the Adirondacks. Paul Smith's College was built on the site of the hotel after the hotel burned down in 1930. It was funded by the estate of Smith's son Phelps, who died in 1937. Adirondack Park
The Adirondack Park is a part of New York's Forest Preserve in northeastern New York, United States. The park was established in 1892 for “the free use of all the people for their health and pleasure”, and for watershed protection. The park's boundary roughly corresponds with the Adirondack Mountains. Unlike most state parks, about 52 percent of the land is privately owned inholdings. State lands within the park are known as Forest Preserve. Land use on public and private lands in the park is regulated by the Adirondack Park Agency. Duane, New York
Duane is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 174 at the 2010 census. The town is named after James Duane, a developer and grandson of New York City mayor James Duane. The town of Duane is within the Adirondack Park at the geographic center of the county. Brighton, Franklin County, New York
Brighton is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 1,435 at the 2010 census. It was named after Brighton, England, by early surveyors in the region. The town is in the southern part of the county and is inside the Adirondack Park. Paul Smith's College is in the community of Paul Smiths, a hamlet of Brighton. History The first settlers in this area arrived around 1815 by way of the Northwest Bay Road, a very crude wagon path linking Westport on Lake Champlain with Hopkinton in St. Lawrence County. Debar Mountain Wild Forest
The Debar Mountain Wild Forest is a tract designated as Wild Forest by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the northeastern Adirondack Park, just north of Paul Smiths, in Franklin County. The area includes of state land and of conservation easement land. The area is served by state routes NY-3, NY-30 and NY-458. Activities supported include hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, horse back riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, canoeing and boating. Debar Mountain, at , offers a broad distant view of the Adirondack High Peaks to the south; Azure Mountain and Debar Meadows are other popular destinations.
