McCracken County, Kentucky
McCracken County is a county located in the far western portion of U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,875. The county seat and only municipality is Paducah. McCracken County was the 78th county formed in the state, having been created in 1825. It is part of the historic Jackson Purchase, territory sold by the Chickasaw people to General Andrew Jackson and Governor Isaac Shelby; this territory was located at the extreme western end of Kentucky. Paducah developed based on its "River and Rail" traffic. Steamboats, barges, and the Illinois Central Railroad were the basis of the economy into the late 20th century. In the 1920s, the Illinois Central built the largest operating and maintenance base in the world here. In the 21st century, McCracken County is part of the Paducah, KY- IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. McCracken County Public Schools
McCracken County Public Schools (MCPS) is a school district headquartered in Hendron, unincorporated McCracken County, Kentucky. The district serves all of McCracken County except for most of the area within the city limits of Paducah, which is served by its own independent school district. However, portions of the city, especially in the west, lie within the McCracken County district, and feed either Heath or Lone Oak Middle School. There are currently eleven schools that make up the MCPS district. On August 9, 2013, a new McCracken County High School opened, combining the three previous high schools. Lone Oak Middle School moved into the former Lone Oak High building. The previous Lone Oak Middle building became Lone Oak Intermediate School, serving 4th and 5th grade students who had in the past attended Lone Oak and Hendron–Lone Oak Elementary Schools. McCracken County High School
McCracken County High School is a public secondary school (grades 9–12) located west of Paducah, Kentucky that opened on August 9, 2013. Operated by the McCracken County Public Schools district, it consolidates that district's three former high schools—Heath, Lone Oak, and Reidland. Before ground was broken for the new school in June 2010, the school's nickname of Mustangs and colors of crimson, black, and white had been finalized. The school opened with an enrollment of slightly under 1,900. Consolidation plans began taking shape in the mid-2000s due to signs of overcrowding at some of the existing high schools. Residents of the county school district ( the Paducah school district, which includes most of the city's population, did not participate in the consolidation) voted in November 2008 to approve the new high school. USS ''McCracken'' (APA-198) was a ''Haskell''-class attack transport acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War II for the task of transporting troops to and from combat areas. World War II service ''McCracken'' (''APA 198'') was laid down as a Victory ships under Maritime Commission contract by Kaiser Shipbuilding Co., Inc., Vancouver, Washington, 8 June 1944; launched 29 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Albert Bauer; acquired by the Navy21 October 1944; and commissioned at Astoria, Oregon, 21 October 1944. After shakedown and training along the U.S. West Coast, ''McCracken'' embarked troops at San Pedro, California, and sailed for Pearl Harbor 27 December. Arriving there 2 January 1945, she departed for the South Pacific Ocean 10 January. Carrying troops and cargo, she reached Noumea, New Caledonia, 20 January.
