Lafayette McLaws
Lafayette McLaws ( ; January 15, 1821 – July 24, 1897) was a United States Army officer and a Confederate general in the American Civil War. He served at Antietam and Fredericksburg, where Robert E. Lee praised his defense of Marye's Heights, and at Gettysburg, where his division made successful assaults through the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield, but was unable to dislodge Union forces from Cemetery Ridge. After the Knoxville Campaign, he was court-martialed for inefficiency, though this was overturned for procedural reasons. Finally he was sent to his native Georgia to resist Sherman's March to the Sea, but had to retreat through the Carolinas, losing many men through desertion, and is presumed to have surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston in April 1865. McLaws remained bitter about his court-martial, especially since the charges had been filed by James Longstreet, his friend and classmate at West Point, with whom he had served for years. Mary-Louise McLaws (; 17 March 1953 – 12 August 2023) was an Australian epidemiologist. Specialising in infectious diseases, she was a professor of epidemiology at the University of New South Wales for over 30 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she became a "household name" in Australia, regularly providing public information and advice on the disease. Early life Mary-Louise McLaws was born in Tasmania on 17 March 1953, the daughter of Barry and Louise Viney. She and her elder brother spent their early years with their mother in Bondi, New South Wales, before moving to the Central Coast where she attended Gosford High School. Shawn McLaws (born March 9, 1993) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender. Career High school McLaws attended Deer Creek High School in Edmond, OK where he lettered in football and soccer. McLaws graduated in 2011. Early career McLaws spent four years at Coastal Carolina University between 2011 and 2014. In his four years with Coastal Carolina he made 89 appearances and scored 1 goal and provided 17 assists. In his last year he was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year. While at college, McLaws appeared for USL PDL club Ocean City Nor'easters during their 2013 and 2014 seasons, serving as team captain in 2014. Virginia Randall McLaws (1872-1967) was an American painter and educator. Biography McLaws was born on August 9, 1872 in Augusta, Georgia. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was known for her landscapes of the American south, executed in an Impressionist style. From 1908 through 1938 she taught at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
