McKenzie House, Albany
McKenzie House, also referred to as the White House, is a residence in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The five bedroom, two bathroom home set on of grounds has sweeping views of Princess Royal Harbour. It was on the market in 2016 for 2.5 million. Built in the 1880s, the two storey heritage listed house is an example of a large Federation Queen Anne style residence. The building is rendered and painted stone and brick with a corrugated iron roof, which is multi hipped and has three chimneys. A projecting wing has two protruding timber framed sash windows at each level; windows have decorative sills and moulding with a prominent timbered gable with timber infill. Both levels have verandahs with timber balustrading. The building was home to William Finlay, the first mayor of Albany. Albany ( ; nys, Kinjarling) is a port city in the Great Southern region in the Australian state of Western Australia, southeast of Perth, the state capital. The city centre is at the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour, which is a part of King George Sound. The central business district is bounded by Mount Clarence to the east and Mount Melville to the west. The city is in the local government area of the City of Albany. While it is the oldest colonial, although not European, settlement in Western Australia - predating Perth and Fremantle by over two years - it was a semi-exclave of New South Wales for over four years until it was made part of the Swan River Colony. Princess Royal Harbour
Princess Royal Harbour is a part of King George Sound on the South coast of Western Australia, and harbour to Albany. On its northern shore is the Port of Albany. The name ''Princess Royal'' also appears in Albany in Princess Royal Fortress and Princess Royal Drive. History The first European to explore the waters was George Vancouver in HMS ''Discovery'' in September 1791; he named the harbour after Princess Charlotte Augusta Matilda, the first daughter and fourth child of King George III. Federation architecture is the architectural style in Australia that was prevalent from around 1890 to 1915. The name refers to the Federation of Australia on 1 January 1901, when the Australian colonies collectively became the Commonwealth of Australia. The architectural style had antecedents in the Queen Anne style and Edwardian style of the United Kingdom, combined with various other influences like the Arts and Crafts style. Other styles also developed, like the Federation Warehouse style, which was heavily influenced by the Romanesque Revival style. The Heritage Council of Western Australia is the Government of Western Australia agency created to identify, conserve and promote places of cultural heritage significance in the state. William Finlay (mayor)
William Finlay (22 February 1840 18 June 1886) was a policeman and the first mayor of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Parents Finlay's parents were William and Marjory Finlay. His father, William Finlay (5 June 1807 11 June 1890) was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1807. He served in the army and rose to the rank of sergeant. William Jr. was born in 1840 in Ireland. Early life The Finlays, both parents and three children, arrived in Western Australia aboard the convict ship '' Scindian'' in 1850 and initially settled at Freshwater Bay. Another five children were born in Western Australia over the next few years. Police Finlay joined the police force in 1858; he served as a constable in Albany in 1864, moving to Williams in 1869, then to York in 1873 and then to Geraldton in 1874.
