The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. Yelm () is a city in Thurston County, Washington, United States. Its population was 10,617 at the 2020 census. At the beginning of the 21st century, Yelm was the 10th fastest growing city in the state in regard to population. History The word "Yelm" is said to come from the Coast Salish word ''shelm'' or ''chelm'', meaning "heat waves from the sun", referring to heat mirages. The Yelm Prairie was originally inhabited by the Nisqually and provided good pasture for their horses. The first permanent non-indigenous settlers came in 1853 to join the Hudson's Bay Company sheep farmers who already conducted business in the area. Nisqually River
The Nisqually River is a river in west central Washington in the United States, approximately long. It drains part of the Cascade Range southeast of Tacoma, including the southern slope of Mount Rainier, and empties into the southern end of Puget Sound. Its outlet was designated in 1971 as the Nisqually Delta National Natural Landmark. The Nisqually River forms the Pierce–Lewis county line, as well as the boundary between Pierce and Thurston counties. Course The river rises in southern Mount Rainier National Park, fed by the Nisqually Glacier on the southern side of Mt. Rainier. It flows west through Ashford and Elbe along Route 706. It is then impounded for hydroelectricity by the Alder Dam, completed in 1944, and the LaGrande Dam, completed in 1912 and rebuilt in 1945. Washington State Route 507
State Route 507 (SR 507) is a Washington state highway in Lewis, Thurston and Pierce counties that extends from (I-5) and (US 12) in Centralia to in Spanaway. The highway also intersects in Yelm and in McKenna. The first appearance of the roadway on a map was in 1916 and since, two highways, (SSH 5H) and , were established on the current route of SR 507 in 1937 and 1943. They both became SR 507 during the 1964 highway renumbering. Route description State Route 507 (SR 507) begins at a diamond interchange with (I-5), co-signed as (US 12) in Centralia. Traveling east as Mellen, Alder and West Cherry Streets, the highway crosses railroad tracks owned by BNSF Railway and used by Amtrak's '' Cascades'' and ''Coast Starlight'' routes, both of which serve the Centralia Amtrak station.
