Darien () is a city in and the county seat of McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. It lies on Georgia's coast at the mouth of the Altamaha River, approximately south of Savannah, and is part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the second oldest planned city in Georgia and was originally called New Inverness. The population of Darien was 1,975 at the 2010 census. Geography Darien is located at (31.371134, −81.430742). McIntosh County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,975, a drop of 23.4 percent since the 2010 census. The county seat is Darien. McIntosh County is included in the Brunswick, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Colonial and Revolutionary period The area which was formally named McIntosh County was originally settled by the British in 1721 with the construction of Fort King George, which was part of a set of forts built as a buffer between the British colonies to the north and Spanish Florida to the south, under the direction of General James Oglethorpe. New Inverness (later named Darien) was founded in 1736 by Scottish Highlanders who were enticed to move to Georgia by General Oglethorpe. Eulonia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in McIntosh County in the U.S. state of Georgia. Part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is in the Low Country between Savannah and Brunswick near Interstate 95. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 351. Geography Eulonia is in central McIntosh, with the CDP centered around the intersection of U.S. Route 17 and Georgia State Route 99. The historic community of Eulonia is north of the crossroads. US 17 leads south to Darien, the county seat, and north to Riceboro. SR 99 leads east to Crescent and west to Interstate 95 at Exit 58. McIntosh County Academy
McIntosh County Academy (MCA) is the only public high school in McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. It was formerly known as Darien High School. History In 1794, the city of Darien was given a charter to build a school. In 1820, a branch of the institution was created and classes were held at local churches. The actual school building was built in 1840 on the corner of Adam Street and Rittenhouse Street. On March 3, 1892, an intentional fire destroyed McIntosh County Academy. The city rebuilt a brick building on top of the remains of the old school in the same year. This was the site of the school for many years, until Darien constructed the new high school off U.S Highway 17. MCA was built using the one cent ESPLOST (Education Special Local Option Sales Tax).
