Scottish Gaelic
Scottish Gaelic ( gd, Gàidhlig ), also known as Scots Gaelic and Gaelic, is a Goidelic language (in the Celtic branch of the Indo-European language family) native to the Gaels of Scotland. As a Goidelic language, Scottish Gaelic, as well as both Irish and Manx, developed out of Old Irish. It became a distinct spoken language sometime in the 13th century in the Middle Irish period, although a common literary language was shared by the Gaels of both Ireland and Scotland until well into the 17th century. Most of modern Scotland was once Gaelic-speaking, as evidenced especially by Gaelic-language place names. In the 2011 census of Scotland, 57,375 people (1.1% of the Scottish population aged over 3 years old) reported being able to speak Gaelic, 1,275 fewer than in 2001. Jack McDowell (politician)
John William McDowell (c. 1922 – 14 August 2006) was a political activist in Northern Ireland. Born on the Shankill Road in Belfast, McDowell studied at Queen's University Belfast and qualified as a teacher, working at the Jordanstown School for the Deaf, where he became vice-principal.JR, "An appreciation: Jack McDowell", ''Irish Times'', 9 October 2006 McDowell joined the British Army during World War II and served during the D-Day invasion. Malik McDowell
Malik Devon McDowell (born June 20, 1996) is an American football defensive tackle who is a free agent. After playing college football for Michigan State, he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He sustained injuries from an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident shortly after being drafted and never played in a game for the Seahawks. His career was further complicated by a legal issue which ultimately resulted in him being sentenced to prison for 11 months in November 2019. In 2021, McDowell returned to the NFL and has since played for the Browns. Louise Sherwood McDowell
Louise Sherwood McDowell (29 September 1876 - 6 July 1966) was an American physicist and educator. She spent most of her career as a professor of physics at Wellesley College and is best known for being one of the first female scientists to work at the United States Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Early life and education Louise McDowell was born in Wayne, New York, to Francis Marion and Eva (Sherwood) McDowell. McDowell received her B.A. in 1898 from Wellesley College. Following graduation she worked as a high school teacher of English, science, and mathematics until 1905. She was then admitted for graduate studies to Cornell University. Linda Margaret McDowell (born 1949) is a British geographer and academic, specialising in the ethnography of work and employment. She was Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford from 2004 to 2016. Joseph Nash McDowell (1805-1868) was one of the most influential and respected doctors west of the Mississippi in the 1840s until his death in 1868. He is primarily remembered for his Grave robbery, grave-digging practices, where he illegally exhumed corpses in order to study Human body, human anatomy. He is also known for his influence on Mark Twain, and was likely the inspiration for Twain's fictional character Dr. Robinson in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Early career Dr. McDowell moved to St. Louis in 1839 with a reputation that preceded him. He had previously worked in Kentucky, Philadelphia and Ohio at various medical facilities, and studied at Transylvania University in Kentucky. Joseph "Pleasant Gardens" McDowell (February 25, 1758 – May 18, 1795) was an American lawyer, soldier, and statesman from Morganton, North Carolina. His estate was named " Pleasant Gardens", and he was nicknamed "Pleasant Gardens" Joe to distinguish him from his cousin, Joseph "Quaker Meadows" McDowell. The two men are not always clearly distinguished in historical records: both were at the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain, one as a major leading the Burke County militia, and the other in a subordinate role as a captain. John Maxwell McDowell (January 29, 1915 – June 8, 1952) was an American racecar driver from Delavan, Illinois. He died in a qualifying crash at the Milwaukee Mile the week after the 1952 Indianapolis 500, 1952 Indy 500. Racing career McDowell was raised in Pasadena, California. He began racing cars at Legion Ascot Speedway in 1934. He later moved on to the independent circuits in the Northwestern United States. He then moved to the CSRA circuit based in Ohio.
