McDade, Texas
McDade is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Bastrop County, Texas, located along U.S. Route 290. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 720. It is east of Elgin and east of Austin. It is west of Giddings. Census Designated Place history This was a new CDP for the 2010 census. The community is named for James W. McDade, a major stockholder in the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1869. The McDade Independent School District serves area students. McDade was, for several years, the childhood home of 1950s television and recording star Gale Storm, as her mother owned a millinery shop in McDade. Josephine Owaissa Cottle (April 5, 1922 – June 27, 2009), known professionally as Gale Storm, was an American actress and singer. After a film career from 1940 to 1952, she starred in two popular television programs of the 1950s, ''My Little Margie'' and ''The Gale Storm Show''. Six of her songs were top ten hits. McDade Independent School District
McDade Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of McDade, Texas, USA. The district has two schools - McDade Elementary - that serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through 5th, Middle School grades 6th through 8th and McDade High School, which is designated for grades 7-12. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. History The district had its own high school until the 1920s after a fire destroyed its designated building. Until circa 2016 the district sent its high school students to the Elgin Independent School District, and to the Bastrop Independent School District.
