Hugh McCulloch
Hugh McCulloch (December 7, 1808 – May 24, 1895) was an American financier who played a central role in financing the American Civil War. He served two non-consecutive terms as U.S. Treasury Secretary under three presidents. He was originally opposed to the creation of a system of national banks, but his reputation as head of the Bank of Indiana 1857 to 1863 persuaded the Treasury to bring him in to supervise the new system as Comptroller of the Currency 1863–65. As Secretary of the Treasury 1865–69 he reduced and funded the gigantic Civil War debt of the union, and reestablished the federal taxation system across the former Confederate States of America. He tried but failed to make a rapid return to the gold standard. He was the last surviving member of the Lincoln Cabinet. Richard McCulloch (born 1949) is an American author who has written several books advocating white nationalism. Theories McCulloch promoted the phrase "declaration of racial independence" in his 1994 book ''The Racial Compact''. In this book he claimed that every race had a requirement for "its own exclusive racial territory or homeland, its own independent and sovereign government". McCulloch has given his views in the white supremacist magazine ''American Renaissance''. Lee Henry McCulloch (born 14 May 1978) is a Scottish professional football coach and former player. He is the first team assistant manager at Scottish Premiership club Heart of Midlothian. McCulloch was capped on eighteen occasions by the Scotland national football team. During his career he has played for Motherwell, Wigan Athletic, Rangers and Kilmarnock at club level. He played mostly as a central defender or a defensive midfielder during his time at Rangers (he also played striker for the club when required) but has also played as an attacking midfielder and winger during his time in English football. Joseph Howard McCulloch (April 5, 1886 – December 15, 1960) was an American football, baseball, and basketball coach, teacher and athletic director. He played college football and baseball at Springfield College from 1908 to 1910. He was the athletic director and coach of the baseball and basketball teams at Carnegie Institute of Technology—now known as Carnegie Mellon University—from 1911 to 1918. After service in the military during World War I, he spent more than 30 years from 1919 through the mid-1950s as the athletic director at Michigan State Normal College—now known as Eastern Michigan University—and served stints as the head coach of the football, basketball and tennis teams. John Ramsay McCulloch (1 March 1789 – 11 November 1864) was a Scottish economist, author and editor, widely regarded as the leader of the Ricardian school of economists after the death of David Ricardo in 1823. He was appointed the first professor of political economy at University College London in 1828. He wrote extensively on economic policy, and was a pioneer in the collection, statistical analysis and publication of economic data. McCulloch was a co-founder, and one of the first editors, of ''The Scotsman'' newspaper, and worked on the ''Edinburgh Review''. He edited the 1828 edition of ''The Wealth of Nations''. James McCulloch (4 June 1953 – 27 September 1979) was a Scottish musician best known for playing lead guitar and bass, as a member of Paul McCartney's band Wings from 1974 to 1977. McCulloch was a member of the Glasgow psychedelic band One in a Million (formerly known as the Jaygars), Thunderclap Newman, and Stone the Crows. Sir James McCulloch, (18 March 1819 – 31 January 1893), British colonial politician, was the fifth Premier of Victoria. Early life McCulloch was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of George McCulloch, a quarry master and contractor, and Jane Thomson, a farmer's daughter. He had only a primary education and as a young man worked in shops, eventually becoming a junior partner in a softgoods firm. On 11 May 1853 McCulloch arrived in Melbourne aboard the ''Adelaide'' ( John Everard being a fellow passenger) to manage the mercantile firm of Dennistoun Brothers in Melbourne.
