The McCormick Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Georgia and South Carolina. The line runs from Augusta, Georgia, to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a distance of . At its south end the line continues north from the Augusta Subdivision and at its north end the line continues north as the Monroe Subdivision. History The route from Augusta to Greenwood was constructed by the Augusta & Knoxville railroad in 1882. In 1886 it became part of the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway and was later reorganized as the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway in 1896. The Monroe Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The line runs from Pee Dee, North Carolina to Abbeville, South Carolina, for a total of 177 miles. The full line is dispatched by Centralized traffic control. Route Description The Monroe Subdivision beings at the Hamlet Terminal Subdivision in Pee Dee, North Carolina (just west of Hamlet, North Carolina). The Augusta and Knoxville Railroad (A&K) was a railroad company that operated on of track between Augusta, Georgia, and Greenwood, South Carolina, from 1882 to 1886. It was merged with three other companies to form the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway, which was reorganized in 1896 as the Charleston and Western Carolina Railway. History The company was chartered in 1877 to connect its namesake cities, and was incorporated on February 3, 1880. Patrick H. Bradley served as president until the incorporation, at which time he stepped down citing poor health to become vice president. Eugene F. Verdery was appointed president at the incorporation meeting, and the interests of the elected board of directors were split with ten directors from Georgia and six directors from South Carolina. Charleston And Western Carolina Railway
The Charleston and Western Carolina Railway (C&WC) was formed in 1896 to operate the lines of the former Port Royal and Augusta Railway (PR&A) and the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway (PR&WC). The PR&A and PR&WC had originally been part of the Central of Georgia Railroad but the South Carolina Legislature had forced the railroad to give up the subsidiary lines. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) took over the C&WC in 1897 but operated it as a subsidiary until 1959 when the ACL fully absorbed it. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. The Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was a Class I railroad company operating in the Southeastern United States beginning in 1967. Its passenger operations were taken over by Amtrak in 1971.
