Artist Residency
Artist-in-residence, or artist residencies, encompass a wide spectrum of artistic programs which involve a collaboration between artists and hosting organisations, institutions, or communities. They are programs which provide artists with space and resources to support their artistic practice. Contemporary artist residencies are becoming increasingly thematic, with artists working together with their host in pursuit of a specific outcome related to a particular theme. Nick Cave (born February 4, 1959) is an American sculptor, dancer, performance artist, and professor. He is best known for his ''Soundsuit'' series: wearable assemblage fabric sculptures that are bright, whimsical, and other-worldly, often made with found objects. He also trained as a dancer with Alvin Ailey and often incorporates dance and performance into his works. His later sculptures have focused on color theory and included mixed media and large-scale installations. Margarita Cabrera
Margarita Cabrera (born 1973) is a Mexican-American artist and activist. As an artist, the objects and activities she produces address issues related to border relations, labor practices and immigration. Her practice spans smaller textile-based soft sculptures to large community-involved public artworks. In 2012 she was a recipient of the Knight Artist in Residence at the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC. Cabrera was also a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. Ambreen Butt
Ambreen Butt (born 1969) is a Boston-based Pakistani United States, American artist best known for her drawings, paintings, prints, and collages, and has been recognized for her labor intensive, painted self-portraits that portray feminist and political ideas through traditional Persian art. Sharif Bey
Sharif Bey (born 1974, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.) is an African American artist, ceramicist and professor. He produces both functional pottery and ceramic and mixed- media sculpture, using a variety of forms and textures. His body of work reflects his interest in the visual heritage of Africa and Oceania, as well as contemporary African American culture. Endia Beal (born February 8, 1985) is an African-American visual artist, curator, and educator. She is known for her work in creating visual narratives through photography and video testimonies focused on women of color working in corporate environments. Joan Bankemper
Joan Bankemper is an American artist living and working in New York City. Her early 'social practice' or site specific garden/art installations blurred the boundaries of art and life. Bankemper is a 'situationist' and her ceramics are artifacts of a situation. In a 1994 review by Roberta Smith of The New York Times, Smith wrote "Bankemper is a veteran creator of idiosyncratic gardens, often portable. She is especially adept at recycling broken crockery and flowerpots into fantastical planters that are homages to Gaudi and Simon Rodia."
