McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Area
The McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), is a U.S. metropolitan statistical area defined by the United States Census Bureau, consisting of one county – Hidalgo – in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas, anchored by the cities of McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr and Mission. It is ranked the fifth most populated metropolitan area in the state of Texas. It is also part of the transnational metropolitan area of Reynosa–McAllen. Demographics As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 569,463 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 741,152). According to the 2010 census, the population had reached 774,769. This population increase of 36.05% places it as the 11th fastest growing metropolitan statistic area from 2000 to 2010. La Joya, Texas
La Joya is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 4,374 at the 2020 United States Census. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas. History Its name, meaning "the jewel", was inspired by a small natural lake west of the city; early settlers were said to observe that the lake shined in the sun like a jewel. The site on which La Joya was founded was part of what was known as "Los Ejidos de Reynosa Viejo". The ''ejidos'' were the shared grazing lands used for the livestock of the settlers of Reynosa Viejo ("Old Reynosa"). Hidalgo is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,198 at the 2010 census, and in 2019 the estimated population was 14,183. History The area that is now Hidalgo was first settled by Spanish colonists led by José de Escandón ''circa'' 1749. Granjeno, Texas
Granjeno is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 293 at the 2010 census. The city sits on the banks of the Rio Grande, near the border with Mexico. Its name comes from the granjeno tree ( ''Celtis pallida'') or spiny hackberry. History Founded in the late 18th century, Granjeno has a history that predates Texas statehood. Granjeno Cemetery was established in 1872 with burials from both sides of the Rio Grande. By the mid-1930s, the community consisted of several dwellings. A school established in Granjeno by 1948.
