Maïdo
The Maïdo is a volcanic peak on the island of Réunion, located above the city of Saint Paul and overlooking the "Cirque de Mafate". French Language
French ( or ) is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering or ~19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. Saint-Paul, Réunion
Saint-Paul () is the second-largest commune in the French overseas department of Réunion. It is located on the extreme west side of the island of Réunion. Until 1999, near Saint Paul there was the 428 metres tall mast OMEGA Chabrier transmitter. Population Transport Saint-Paul was to be the western terminus of the proposed Réunion Tram Train. However, the project was abandoned in May 2010 due to a lack of funds. The traditional grave of French pirate Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed ''La Buse'' ("The Buzzard") or ''La Bouche'' ("The Mouth"), who was most famous for allegedly hiding one of the biggest treasures in pirate history, estimated at over £1 billion, is located in Saint-Paul's Cimetière marin de Saint-Paul cemetery. Cirque
A (; from the Latin word ') is an amphitheatre-like valley formed by glacial erosion. Alternative names for this landform are corrie (from Scottish Gaelic , meaning a pot or cauldron) and (; ). A cirque may also be a similarly shaped landform arising from fluvial erosion. The concave shape of a glacial cirque is open on the downhill side, while the cupped section is generally steep. Cliff-like slopes, down which ice and glaciated debris combine and converge, form the three or more higher sides. The floor of the cirque ends up bowl-shaped, as it is the complex convergence zone of combining ice flows from multiple directions and their accompanying rock burdens. Mafate
The ''Cirque de Mafate'' is a caldera on Réunion Island (France; located in the Indian Ocean). It was formed from the collapse of the large shield volcano the ''Piton des Neiges''. The very remote and inaccessible cirque was settled in the 19th century by maroon slaves (i.e. slaves who had escaped from their masters), then later by poor white laborers. It owes its name to one maroon leader. Geography The cirque is entirely enclosed by mountains, especially tall cliffs, known as ''remparts'', save for the sole river exiting, the ''Rivière des Galets'' ("river of the pebbles"). Inside the cirque, there are considerable declivities. The ''îlets'' are pieces of more-or-less flat lands, on which the hamlets are located. The name "Mafate" comes from the Malagasy word "Mahafaty", which means lethal, an allusion to the difficulty of reaching the Cirque. Acacia Heterophylla
''Acacia heterophylla'', the highland tamarind,Forestry Abstracts, University of Oxford Commonwealth Forestry Bureau, p.327, 1939 is a tree (or shrub in its higher places) endemic to Réunion island where it is commonly named ''tamarin des hauts'' The tree has a juvenile stage where its leaves have a pinnate arrangement, but in the adult stage the leaves diminish and the phyllode becomes the dominant photosynthetic structure. It has been introduced into Madagascar where it grows in a subhumid climate at an altitude of about 500–1000 m above sea level. University Of La Reunion
The University of Reunion Island (''Université de la Réunion'') is a French university in the Academy of Réunion. It is the first and only European university in the Indian Ocean.
