Mazarambroz is a municipality located in the province of Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. According to the 2006 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 1314 inhabitants. Archaeology In Roman times there was a reservoir supplying the city of Toledo via an aqueduct. There are some remains of the dam. Ecology It is one of the areas in the Montes de Toledo where the Iberian lynx has been reintroduced. Iberian Lynx
The Iberian lynx (''Lynx pardinus'') is a wild cat species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. In the 20th century, the Iberian lynx population had declined because of overhunting, poaching, fragmentation of suitable habitats, and the population decline of its main prey species, the European rabbit (''Oryctolagus cuniculus''), caused by myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease. By the turn of the 21st century, the Iberian lynx was on the verge of extinction, as only 94 individuals survived in two isolated subpopulations in Andalusia in 2002. Conservation measures have been implemented since then, which included improving habitat, restocking of rabbits, translocating, reintroducing and monitoring Iberian lynxes. __NOTOC__ The Alcantarilla Dam is a ruined Roman gravity dam in Mazarambroz, Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, dating to the 2nd century BC. The toponym "Alcantarilla" means conduit and is of Arabic origin:It is the diminutive of "alcántara" from the Arabic word ''al-QanTarah'' (القنطرة) meaning "the bridge". the Latin name is unknown. The dam is believed to be the oldest dam in Spain, and is possibly the oldest known Roman dam. It was high and at least long. The dam and reservoir were part of the water supply system of the city of Toletum ( Toledo). They were constructed on a tributary of the River Tagus. The water was conveyed to the city by an aqueduct which passed through Layos. The Montes de Toledo are one of the main systems of mountain ranges in the Iberian Peninsula. They divide the drainage basin of the Tagus from the basin of the Guadiana. The highest peak is high La Villuerca.
