Mazaediothecium Mohamedii
''Mazaediothecium mohamedii'' is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) and crustose lichen in the family Pyrenulaceae. It is found in Peninsular Malaysia. Taxonomy The lichen was formally described as a new species in 2007 by Hiroshi Harada and Yoshikazu Yamamoto. The type specimen was collected by the first author from the Field Studies Centre of the University of Malaya (Gombak, Selangor) at an elevation of ; here, in a tropical rainforest, the lichen was growing on the trunk of a hardwood on the side of the road. It is only known to occur at the type locality. The species epithet ''mohamedii'' refers to Professor Haji Mohamed, who arranged the field survey where this specimen was collected. ''Mazaediothecium uniseptatum'' is a species of calicioid lichen in the family Pyrenulaceae. Found in French Guiana, it was formally described as a new species in 2015 by Dutch lichenologist André Aptroot. The type specimen was collected near the village sentier Limonade in Saül at an altitude of ; here, in a mixed forest, the lichen was found growing on the higher trunk of a '' Protium'' tree. It has a dull, greyish-white thallus that lacks a cortex and is surrounded by a brown prothallus line. The apothecia are black but covered in their upper half with a golden yellow pruina; they are about 0.2 mm in diameter and up to 0.6 mm high. The asci soon disintegrate to form a mazaedium layer. André Aptroot
André Aptroot (Heemskerk, 1961) is a Dutch mycologist and lichenologist. In 1993 he did his PhD at the University of Utrecht under the supervision of Robbert Gradstein (nl). His dissertation was titled "Systematic studies on pyrenocarpous lichens and related fungi". He specializes in fungi and lichens on which he has several hundreds of publications to his name. He has worked as curator at Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (now Westerdijk Institute). Aptroot is the founder of the Consultancy for Bryology and Lichenology, which is located in Soest where there is a herbarium with a collection of lichens mainly from the Netherlands and the tropics. From 2008 he has been collection manager at Pinetum Blijdenstein (nl) in Hilversum. He is a member of the International Association for Lichenology and the American Bryological and Lichenological Society. Lichens are composite organisms made up of multiple species: a fungal partner, one or more photosynthetic partners, and sometimes a basidiomycete yeast. They are regularly grouped by their external appearance – a characteristic known as their growth form. In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus.
