Maz Quinn
Maz Quinn (born 7 August 1976) is a New Zealand surfer. A four-time winner of New Zealand's national surfing championships, and winner of the 1996 Billabong Pro-Junior Series, Quinn is regarded as one of the country's foremost surfers. Quinn was born in Hamilton, but his family moved to Gisborne when he was two years old. He was educated at Elgin Primary School, Gisborne Intermediate and Gisborne Boys' High School. Always an enthusiastic surfer, his passion for the sport increased when the family moved to the small community of Wainui Beach when he was a teenager. Gisborne Intermediate
Gisborne Intermediate School is a co-education public intermediate school in Gisborne, New Zealand for students in Year 7 to 8. As of 2016, the school had a roll of 590 students. History Gisborne Intermediate School opened on 20 May 1940 with a school roll of 440 pupils and F. R. Slevin as headmaster. Slevin resigned in 1945 and was succeeded by R. McGlashen. In 2014, the school underwent a $2.3 million upgrade as part of the New Zealand Ministry of Education's Building Improvement Programme which included the construction of a new music suite with an outdoor performance area. School organisation Gisborne Intermediate is divided into four education teams. They each have their own individual colour and are named after local Gisborne rivers. Wainui Beach
Wainui Beach is a small settlement on the coast of New Zealand's North Island, located just to the north of Tuaheni Point, some 8 km to the east of Gisborne, to which it is linked by State Highway 35. The beach is one of the NZ Automobile Association's ''101 Must-do places for Kiwis''. It is noted for its consistent surf breaks. Surfing
Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Hamilton ( mi, Kirikiriroa) is an inland city in the North Island of New Zealand. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, it is the seat and most populous city of the Waikato region. Gisborne Boys' High School
Gisborne Boys' High School is a boys' secondary school situated in Gisborne, New Zealand. It was founded as a co-educational school in 1909 as Gisborne High School. In 1956, the school became Gisborne Boys' High School when it was split into two single-sex schools. Gisborne High School's First Fifteen Rugby Team had its first rugby game against Napier Boys’ High School in 1911. Since then it has produced many professional rugby players including Hosea Gear and Rico Gear. The school's First Fifteen rugby team has toured many countries competing in various competitions. Women's Surfing
Women's surfing is thought to date back to the 17th century. One of the earliest records of women surfing is of princess Keleanohoana’api’api, also known as Kalea or the Maui Surf Riding Princess. It is rumored that Kalea was the trailblazer of surfing and could surf better than both men and women. A few centuries later in the mid-late 1800s, Thrum’s Hawaiian Annual reported that women in ancient Hawaii surfed in equal numbers and frequently better than men. Over the last 50 years, women's surfing has grown in popularity. Origin Surfing most likely started in New Guinea. It was a sport full of culture, fun, and adventure. The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was originally known as the International Professional Surfing founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events.
