Mayurpankh
''Mayurpankh'' is a 1954 Indian film directed by Kishore Sahu. It was screened in the 1954 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival. The choreography of the Kathak dance in it was by Shirin Vajifdar, a pioneering Parsi dancer. The film is in colour. Plot The film is in part narration by the protagonist and part dialogue. Famous British author Joan Davis goes to India with her boyfriend and encounters Ranjit Singh, a game hunter, in the jungles of India. They fall in love but Joan discovers that Ranjit is married. They meet again in Jaipur at Ranjit's palace, during Ranjit's sister's wedding and Joan meets his wife Shanti. They immediately start liking each other. Ranjit's father is a mining baron and Joan's boyfriend a mining engineer. Both of them strike a deal and Ranjit has to go to England with them. Kishore Sahu
Kishore Sahu (22 November 1915 – 22 August 1980) was an Indian actor, film director, screenwriter, and producer. He appeared in 22 films between 1937 and 1980, and he directed 20 films between 1942 and 1974. His directorial venture Kuwara Baap was one of the winners for the BFJA - Best Indian Films Award for best film for 1943. His film ''Raja'' has been called "a milestone of art and skill in motion pictures". His film ''Veer Kunal'' was a huge box office success. He directed Dilip Kumar with Kamini Kaushal in Nadiya Ke Paar, which became the sixth highest grossing Indian film of 1948. His 1954 film Mayurpankh was entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival. Sumitra Devi (actress)
Sumitra Devi (; 22 July 1923 – 28 August 1990) was an Indian actress who is recognised for her work in Hindi as well as Bengali cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. She is most remembered for her role in the 1952 Hindi film '' Mamta'' directed by Dada Gunjal. She was the recipient of BFJA Award for Best Actress for two times. She was one of the exquisite beauties of her time and has been regarded as the most beautiful woman of her time by veterans such as Pradeep Kumar and Uttam Kumar. In 1943 she was summoned for an interview and look test in the office of New Theatres and was finally cast opposite K. L. Saigal in Hemchander Chander’s ''Meri Bahen'' (1944). Shirin Vajifdar
Shirin Vajifdar (died 29 September 2017) was an Indian classical dancer, choreographer, instructor and critic. She was one of the first Parsis who took up Indian classical dance. A doyenne of Kathak, she was an acclaimed performer and teacher. Her choreography in the film '' Mayurpankh'' (1954) was lauded. Life Shirin Vajifdar was born in Bombay, India. She had two younger sisters, Khurshid and Roshan. They were brought up in an orphanage in Bombay. In the 1930s, defying the disapproval of her community, Vajifdar began to learn Kathak with Sunder Prasad, a teacher from the Jaipur Gharana. She also attended the Nrityalayam dance academy run by Madame Menaka in Khandala, at the same time as Shevanti Bhonsale and Damayanti Joshi. Shankar–Jaikishan
Shankar–Jaikishan (also known as S-J), were an Indian composer duo of the Hindi film industry, working together from 1949 to 1971. They are widely considered to be one of the greatest ever music composers of the Hindi film industry. After Jaikishan’s death in 1971, Shankar continued as a music director alone until his own death in 1987. During this solo career, he was still credited as 'Shankar–Jaikishan'. Shankar–Jaikishan, along with other artists, composed "everlasting" and "immortal melodies" in the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. 1954 Cannes Film Festival
The 7th Cannes Film Festival was held from 25 March to 9 April 1954. With Jean Cocteau as President of the Jury, the Grand Prix went to the '' Gate of Hell'' by Teinosuke Kinugasa. The festival opened with '' Le Grand Jeu'' by Robert Siodmak. This was the last festival with a predominantly French jury. As the festival was becoming more and more a pole of showbiz attraction, scandals and romances of stars were appearing in the press.
