Pithoragarh ( Kumaoni: ''Pithor'garh'') is a Himalayan city with a Municipal Board in Pithoragarh district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the fourth largest city of Kumaon and the largest in Kumaon hills. It is an education hub of the hilly region as the town has Laxman Singh Mahar Govt.P.G.College, Seemant Institute of Technology, now known as Nanhi Pari Seemant Engineering Institute and a nursing college. Kumaonis, also known as Kumaiye and Kumain (in Nepal), are an Indo-Aryan ethno-linguistic group who speak Kumaoni language as their first-language and live mostly in Kumaon region in the Indian Himalayas . 2017 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Election
The 2017 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election were the 4th Vidhan Sabha ( Legislative Assembly) election of the state of Uttarakhand in India. Elections were held on 15 February 2017 in a single phase for the 69 seats of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Voting in the Karnaprayag constituency was postponed until 9 March 2017 due to the death of BSP candidate Kuldeep Kanwasi in a road accident. In the previous election in 2012, none of the parties won a majority but the Indian National Congress formed the government with the help of PDF in the leadership of Vijay Bahuguna. The voter turnout for the 69 seats of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly that held on 15 February was 65.64% which is less than the last election's voter turnout of 66.85%. Prakash Pant
Prakash Pant was a Bharatiya Janata Party leader and member of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in India. He was elected from Pithoragarh (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in the 2002 to 2007 but in 2012 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election, he lost to Mayukh Mahar of Indian National Congress. He was the first speaker of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. He was also a minister in Government of Uttarakhand with portfolios of Tourism, Culture, Pilgrimage Endowment, parliamentary Affairs & Reorganization. He died of cancer in Texas on 5 June 2019.
