The mayor of Portland, Oregon is the official head of the city of Portland, Oregon, United States. The officeholder is elected for a four-year term and has no term limits. By law, all elections in Portland are nonpartisan. The current mayor is Keith Wilson, who has served since January 1, 2025, and was first elected in the 2024 election. The current term for mayor of Portland is four years, having been increased from two years in 1913. Mayoral elections were previously held in May of US presidential election years (years divisible by four), during the Oregon primary election, with a runoff between the top two vote-getters held in November of the same year should no candidate garner a majority vote in the May election, however a new system taking effect in 2024 holds a single general election in November of Presidential election years using the Instant Runoff ranked choice voting method. Hugh O'Bryant
Hugh Donaldson O'Bryant (1813–1883) was an American politician who served as the first mayor of Portland, Oregon, from 1851 to 1852. He later served as the President of the Oregon Territory Council, and as a member of the Washington Territorial Legislature. Early life Hugh O’Bryant was born on December 5, 1813 in Franklin County, Georgia, to Duncan O'Bryant and Martha Whitehead. His father was a Methodist missionary, and O'Bryant was raised among the Cherokee Indians due to his father’s missionary work to them beginning in 1821. The state of Georgia began to require all missionaries working with the Cherokees to swear an oath to the state. O'Bryant's father refused and moved his family to Arkansas where he continued his missionary work to the Cherokees until his death in 1834. James O'Neill (Washington Politician)
James O'Neill (February 9, 1826 – July 21, 1901) was an American businessman and politician in the Oregon Territory and the territory and state of Washington. A New York native, he was mayor of Portland, Oregon, and an Indian Agent in Idaho and Washington territories. Oregon Rifles
The Oregon Rifles was the first military force organized for the protection of white settlers of the Oregon Country in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Shortly after the Whitman Massacre, Oregon Governor George Abernethy communicated to the legislature his concern about the seriousness of the conditions, and issued a call for volunteers. A company of 45 men, furnishing their own rifles and equipment, organized in Oregon City and arrived in The Dalles on December 21, 1847. Those who did not have their own rifles were furnished arms by John McLoughlin. H. A. G. Lee was named captain of the unit.
