Mayor Of Dudley
The Mayor of Dudley is an office held by a councillor of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley. The post is partly ceremonial although the mayor does also preside over full meetings of the council and has the duty of holding decision makers to account. The mayor is elected by fellow councillors in May of each year. Before 1865, when the municipal borough was incorporated, the position was associated with the Court Leet of the Lords of Dudley, which governed the borough of Dudley from at least the middle of the 16th century and probably from the Middle Ages. Dudley Council House
Dudley Council House is a municipal building in Priory Road, Dudley, West Midlands, England. The Council House, which is the meeting place of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council is a Grade II listed building. History The first town hall in Dudley was a medieval structure in the Market Place completed in 1653. It was arcaded on the ground floor, so that markets could be held, with an assembly room on the first floor and a cupola with a clock at roof level. It was demolished in 1860 and replaced with a fountain in 1867. The second town hall was built in Priory Road in the 1860s, but after the town became a county borough in 1889 and following further industrial growth in the early 20th century, civic leaders decided to procure a more substantial structure on the same site and the second town hall was demolished to make way for the current structure in 1924. William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl Of Dudley
William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley, (25 May 1867 – 29 June 1932), was a British aristocrat, politician, and military officer who served as the fourth Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1908 to 1911. He was previously Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1902 to 1905, and also a government minister under Lord Salisbury. Dudley was the son of William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley, and succeeded to the earldom at the age of 17. He inherited a substantial fortune and the palatial family seat at Witley Court. Dudley sat with the Conservative Party in the House of Lords, and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade from 1895 to 1902. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland when Arthur Balfour came to power, and was regarded as a competent administrator. His time in Dublin led to his inclusion as a character in James Joyce's ''Ulysses''. Gilbert Henry Claughton
Sir Gilbert Henry Claughton, 1st Baronet (21 February 1856 – 27 June 1921), was an English businessman and politician. Born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England Claughton was the son of the Right Reverend Thomas Legh Claughton, Bishop of St Albans, by the Honourable Julia Susannah Ward, daughter of William Ward, 10th Baron Ward. He was Mayor of Dudley between 1891 and 1894 and one of the original members of the Staffordshire County Council. He was an Alderman of the council between 1895 and 1921. In 1906 he stood unsuccessfully as a Conservative for Dudley. From 1911 to 1921 he served as Chairman of the London and North Western Railway. He was created a baronet, of The Priory in the Parish of Dudley in the County of Worcester, on 4 July 1912. He died in June 1921, aged 65, when the title became extinct. William Ward, 3rd Viscount Dudley And Ward
William Ward, 3rd Viscount Dudley and Ward (21 January 1750 – 25 April 1823) was a British peer and politician. Ward was the son of John Ward, 1st Viscount Dudley and Ward, by his second wife Mary Carver. He was elected to the House of Commons for Worcester in 1780, a seat he held until 1788, when he succeeded his half-brother in the viscountcy and entered the House of Lords. In 1780 he married Julia Bosville, younger daughter of Godfrey Bosville of Gunthwaite, Yorkshire, and sister of the ardent Whig Colonel William Bosville (1745–1813). Ward died in April 1823, aged 73, and was succeeded by his son John, who served as Foreign Secretary and was created Earl of Dudley in 1827. Bean Cars was a brand of motor vehicles made in England by A Harper Sons & Bean, Ltd at factories in Dudley, Worcestershire, and Coseley, Staffordshire. The company began making cars in 1919 and diversified into light commercial vehicles in 1924. For a few years in the early 1920s Bean outsold Austin and Morris. Bean suffered financial difficulties and the steel-maker Hadfields Limited took it over in 1926. The launch of an under-developed new model in 1928 worsened sales, and the company stopped making cars in 1929. Hadfields continued Bean commercial vehicle production as "Bean New Era" until June 1931. Originally a municipal borough, it became a county borough in 1889, centred on the main town centre of Dudley, along with the suburbs of Netherton and Woodside.
