Municipality Of The Glebe
The Municipality of The Glebe was a Local government in Australia, local government area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The municipality was proclaimed on 1 August 1859 and, with an area of 2 square kilometres, included the modern suburbs of Glebe, New South Wales, Glebe and Forest Lodge, New South Wales, Forest Lodge. The council was amalgamated with the City of Sydney to the east with the passing of the ''Local Government (Areas) Act 1948'', although parts of the former council area were transferred in 1967 to the Municipality of Leichhardt to the west (now the Inner West Council). Michael Chapman (Australian Politician)
Michael Chapman (1822 – 23 February 1906) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born at Cloyne to property owner William Chapman and Mary. In 1840 he migrated to New South Wales, and on 11 December 1846 he married Catherine Shanahan, with whom he had four children. A successful oil trader, he served on Sydney City Council from 1860 to 1862 and from 1866 to 1900; he was also a Glebe alderman from 1866 to 1875 and from 1878 to 1893, and mayor from 1882 to 1884. In 1883 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Glebe. William Alston Hutchinson
William Alston Hutchinson (26 March 1839 – 20 June 1897) was an English-born Australian politician, manufacturer, merchant and colliery director. He was born at Garrigill near Cumbria in Cumberland to storekeeper Thomas Hutchinson and Jane Phillipson. He attended Alston Grammar School and migrated to Melbourne in 1857, goldmining at Castlemaine and Ballarat. In 1860 he moved to Newcastle in New South Wales, and in 1861 he married Barbara Telena Steel, with whom he had eight children. He moved to Sydney in 1872, where he became a soap and candle merchant. He was a Balmain alderman from 1878 and later mayor; he was also an alderman of the Municipality of The Glebe from 1893 until 1897, serving as mayor from 12 February 1894 until February 1896. Stanley Cole (politician)
Stanley Llewellyn Cole (29 March 1860 – 17 November 1942) was an Australian politician. Born in Gardiner, Victoria, to gardener George Cole and Emma Lewis Leek, he came to Sydney around 1878 and worked as a carrier, founding S. L. Cole & Son in 1883. On 29 March 1883 he married Isabella Jane Moorley, with whom he had five children. He served as an alderman of Glebe from 1902 to 1925 (mayor 1908–10, 1915, 1921–23), and as a Sydney City alderman from 1924 to 1927. From 1922 to 1924 he was President of the Local Government Association, having served as President of the Master Carriers' Association from 1921 to 1922. Bob Gorman
Robert Douglas Gorman (1 May 1898 – 2 November 1970) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1933 and 1950. During his parliamentary career he was, at various times a member of the Labor Party, the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and the Australian Labor Party (Non-Communist) . Early life Gorman was born in Glebe, New South Wales and was the son of a master mariner. He was educated at the Patrician Brothers' School, Glebe and became a warehouseman and commercial traveller. After 1919, he became an officer of the Shop Assistants Union. Gorman was elected as an alderman of Glebe Municipal Council from 1926 until 1934 and was the mayor in 1933. Horace Foley
Horace John Foley (23 November 1900 – 3 July 1989) was an Australian medical practitioner and mayor of Glebe. Foley was born at Mudgee to schoolteacher James Foley and Margaret Mary, ''née'' English. He attended Mudgee High School before studying medicine at the University of Sydney, from which he graduated in 1926. He practised first at Strathfield before moving to Glebe, where he worked for the rest of his career. He married Sarah Agnes May Farmer at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Rockdale on 23 November 1932. Foley was a member of the Labor Party, and supported Premier Jack Lang in the 1930s split. He ran unsuccessfully for the state seat of Burwood in 1932 before winning election to Glebe Council in December 1934, serving as mayor in 1937 and 1938. He clashed with Lang and in December 1937 led his own group, the "Foley Labor Party", which defeated Lang's forces at the municipal elections.
