Shreveport ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the third most populous city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge, respectively. The Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan area, with a population of 393,406 in 2020, is the fourth largest in Louisiana, though 2020 census estimates placed its population at 397,590. The bulk of Shreveport is in Caddo Parish, of which it is the parish seat. It extends along the west bank of the Red River (most notably at Wright Island, the Charles and Marie Hamel Memorial Park, and Bagley Island) into neighboring Bossier Parish. The United States Census Bureau's 2020 census tabulation for the city's population was 187,593, though the American Community Survey's census estimates determined 189,890 residents. Samuel Levy (Louisiana Politician)
Samuel Levy (March 17, 1876 – March 15, 1953) was an American lawyer, businessman, and public official, who served as Manhattan Borough President. Life and career Levy was born in New York City on March 17, 1876, to a Jewish family. He graduated from the University of the City of New York (now New York University) in 1894 and received a law degree from New York Law School in 1896. In addition to maintaining a law practice, Levy was a successful businessman, with his primary interests being real estate investment and development. A Democrat, he served on the New York Board of Education from 1929 to 1931. In 1931, Levy was appointed to complete an unexpired term as Manhattan Borough President. He won election to a full four-year term in 1933. Levy considered a run for Mayor in 1937. He instead backed Senator Royal S. Alexander "Aleck" Boarman (December 10, 1839 – August 30, 1916) was a United States representative from Louisiana and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Previously, he served in the Confederate States Army and as Mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana. Education and career Born on December 10, 1839, in Yazoo City, Yazoo County, Mississippi, Boarman lost his parents in infancy and was raised by relatives in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He attended the common schools of Shreveport and Kentucky Military Institute in Franklin, Kentucky, graduated from Kentucky University (now Transylvania University) in 1860 and read law in 1860.
