The Mayor of Bengaluru is the first citizen of the Indian city of Bengaluru. The Mayor is the Chief of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike. The role of Mayor is largely ceremonial. The Mayor also plays a functional role in deliberating over the discussions in the Corporation. The term of the Mayor is set for 5 years as per the ''Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Act of 2020'', during the erstwhile act of ''Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act of 1976'' the term was fixed for 1 year. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is the administrative body responsible for civic amenities and some infrastructural assets of the Greater Bengaluru metropolitan area. It is the fourth largest Municipal Corporation in India and is responsible for a population of 8.4 million in an area of 741 km2. Its boundaries have expanded more than 10 times over the last six decades. Its roles and responsibilities include the "orderly development of the city" — zoning and building regulations, health, hygiene, licensing, trade and education, as well as quality of life issues such as public open space, water bodies, parks and greenery. The BBMP represents the third level of government (the Central Government and State Government being the first two levels). Prema Cariappa
Iychettira Prema Cariappa is an Indian political and social worker. A politician from Indian National Congress party, she was a former Mayor of Bangalore and a former MP (member of the Parliament of India), as she was representing Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.
