The mayor of Austin is the official head of the city of Austin in the U.S. state of Texas. The office was established in 1840 after Austin incorporated as a city in 1839. The mayor of Austin is elected to a four-year term and limited to serving no more than two terms. Duties and powers Austin has a council–manager form of government which means day-to-day operations of the city are run by the city manager. The mayor is the head of city government ceremonially. The mayor is technically a member of the city council and is required to preside at all meetings. The mayor is also allowed to vote on all matters that come before the city council, but has no veto powers. As of fiscal year 2014–15, the salary for the mayor is set at $82,387. Kirk Watson (politician)
Kirk Preston Watson (born 1958) is an American attorney and politician serving as the 54th and 59th mayor of Austin, Texas, serving from 1997 to 2001, and again since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he ran unsuccessfully for Texas Attorney General in the 2002 election, when he was defeated by Republican Greg Abbott, later governor of Texas. In 2006, Watson was elected to the Texas Senate from District 14. In 2011, Watson was chosen by his Democratic colleagues to chair the Senate Democratic Caucus and served until 2015. Jeffrey Friedman (politician)
Jeffrey Mark "Jeff" Friedman (1945-2007) was an American politician in the state of Texas. Friedman was a campus political activist who became the youngest person ever elected to the City Council of Austin, Texas in 1971. Shelly "Lee" Leffingwell (born October 13, 1939) is an American environmentalist and politician who served as the mayor of Austin, Texas, from June 22, 2009 to January 6, 2015. He was first elected to the Austin City Council in 2005, and won re-election in 2008. He was elected mayor in 2009, and subsequently re-elected to a second three-year term on May 12, 2012, with over 52% of the vote. William Patrick Wynn (born September 10, 1961) is an American businessman and politician, who was the mayor of Austin, Texas from 2003 to 2009. Family Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, Wynn was the sixth of seven children. He attended Texas A&M University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in Environmental Design in 1984. He served as mayor of Austin, Texas from 1988 to 1991, being described by ''The Austin Chronicle'' as a "business-booster". Carole Stewart Keeton (born September 13, 1939), formerly known as Carole Keeton McClellan, Carole Keeton Rylander and Carole Keeton Strayhorn, is an American politician and the former Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Roy Anderson Butler, Sr. (March 31, 1926 – November 13, 2009), was an American politician and businessman who served as the mayor of the capital city of Austin, Texas, from 1971 until 1975. Butler was the first Austin mayor directly elected by city voters. Prior to his 1971 election, Austin mayors had been appointed by the Austin City Council.
