The Mayo River is located in the Mexican state of Sonora. The Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Dam generates electricity and irrigates agriculture in the Mayo Valley. Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Dam
The Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Dam, built in 1955 is a medium-sized reservoir, located in the Mexican state of Sonora; it provides water for the Río Mayo Irrigation district. At 1,100 million m3 it ranks the 25th largest reservoir in Mexico. In 1985 the dam overflowed reservoir forcing the evacuation of 20,000 people. Description and Statistics The main source of water supply for the irrigation district is the watershed of the Mayo River (hence the name Rio Mayo), which covers an approximate area of 11,000 km2. Navojoa
Navojoa is the fifth-largest city in the northern Mexican state of Sonora and is situated in the southern part of the state. The city is the administrative seat of Navojoa Municipality, located in the Mayo River Valley. History The city name derives from the native Mayo language meaning "Cactus House" or "Cactus Place" ("Navo"= Cactus, "Jova"= House).
