Mayne Football Club
Mayne Australian Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in the Brisbane suburb of Enoggera. The club colours are black and gold and they are nicknamed the Tigers. It is the most successful club in the history of the Queensland Australian Football League, Queensland's highest level of competition, with 15 premierships from the 1920s to the 1980s. The clubs most recent premiership was in 1982, with a Grand Final appearance in 1985. However after a long drought of success, and following its exclusion from the competition in 1999 struggled to remain competitive with the state's top clubs. As a result the club's men's team currently competes in the second level below the QAFL, QFA Division 1, and the women's team competes in QFAW Division 2. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Enoggera is a north-western suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is home to the Gallipoli Barracks. Geography Enoggera is by road north-west of the Brisbane GPO. Jason Akermanis
Jason Dean Akermanis (born 24 February 1977) is a former professional Australian rules football player who played in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is a Brownlow Medallist and triple premiership player who played for the Brisbane Bears, Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs. Early life Akermanis was born in Mildura, Victoria to a Canadian father John Akermanis, and an Australian mother Shona Carswell, but moved to Brisbane at 9 years of age. Upon arriving in Queensland in 1986, Akermanis signed up to play for the Mayne under-10s side. When he was 13, Akermanis discovered that he was not the son of his mother's former partner, John Akermanis. His biological father was Denis Dezdjek, a mechanic from Mildura who his mother had an affair with. Richard Champion
Richard Champion (born 14 April 1968 on Yorke Peninsula in Kadina, South Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League (AFL) and South Australian National Football Leagues (SANFL). Originally from SANFL club Woodville, Champion was a high draft pick by the Brisbane Bears in 1988 VFL Draft, but he did not move to Brisbane until the 1991 AFL season. A solidly built and tough backman, Champion wore the number 1 guernsey for Brisbane and was a Bears stalwart through some of the club's darkest years, and he was a poster player in an era when the club had so few. When the club moved from Carrara on the Gold Coast, growing their fanbase, Champion became a cult figure. Mick Nolan (footballer)
Michael Francis Nolan (9 November 1949 – 27 May 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Because of his weight of 135 kg and height of 194 cm, Nolan was dubbed "The Galloping Gasometer" by commentator Lou Richards. Until the emergence of Aaron Sandilands (only 120 kg) in the early 2000s, Nolan was the heaviest ruckman to play VFL/AFL football. He was nevertheless surprisingly agile and regarded as one of the best "palm" ruckmen of the 1970s. Nolan had a long kick and was unusually effective, for a big man, in picking up the ball at ground level. As a child in Tarrawingee, Victoria, Nolan supported St Kilda and had the ambition of playing in their first ever premiership. Greg Hollick
Gregory Russell Hollick (born 7 October 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) during the 1970s. Hollick was a ruck rover, half back and occasional forward who joined Richmond from Sunraysia Football League club Irymple. He was a regular fixture in the team in 1971 when he played 19 games, including Richmond's semi final win and preliminary final loss. The following season he appeared in two further finals but was unable to make the premiership decider due to his national service training. Although signed by Melbourne in 1973, Hollick instead ended up at West Adelaide in the SANFL. He won a Grogan Medal while at Queensland club Mayne in 1981.
