Maya Gabeira
Maya Reis Gabeira (born April 10, 1987) is a Brazilian big wave surfer. She is best known for having surfed a high wave in Nazaré, Portugal in February 2020, recorded by ''Guinness World Records'' as the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman. She also held the previous record for biggest wave ever surfed by a woman, of established in January 2018. Gabeira has received numerous accolades including the ESPY award for Best Female Action Sports Athlete and is the best female surfers in the world as well as one of the most influential female surfers of all time. Career Gabeira started surfing at age 13 in Rio de Janeiro and started competing at 15 years old. Praia do Norte (‘North Beach’) is a beach located in Nazaré, Portugal, which due to its giant white breaking waves is famed for its surfing conditions. Nazaré's waves were listed on the ''Guinness Book of Records'' for the biggest waves ever surfed. Overview Praia do Norte’s very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. Fernando Gabeira
Fernando Paulo Nagle Gabeira (; born February 17, 1941) is a Brazilian politician, author and journalist. He was a federal deputy for the State of Rio de Janeiro from 1995 to 2011. He is best known for his book ''O que é isso, companheiro?'' (literally "What is this, comrade?") written in 1979. The book tells of the armed resistance to the military dictatorship in Brazil, and particularly describes the 1969 episode of the kidnapping of the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick, in which Gabeira took part as a member of MR8, a group trying to fight the military dictatorship installed in Brazil five years prior. The book was made into a movie in 1997, titled ''Four Days in September'' in English. The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was originally known as the International Professional Surfing founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events.
