Maxwelltown Volunteers F.C.
The Maxwelltown Volunteers Football Club was a football team based in Dumfries, Scotland. History The club emerged from volunteer regiments (i.e. part-time soldiers) being raised in response to increasing unrest within Continental Europe and the British Empire, the Maxwelltown Volunteers being founded by 1860. Ultimately eleven Companies were raised throughout Galloway and their services accepted by Queen Victoria. Maxwelltown in Dumfries was the home of the 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers, until in 1896 reforms saw the 5th KRV abolished, its members joining the Maxwelltown Volunteers regiment and the members of the former regiment's football club founding a new club in 1897. The Volunteers entered the Scottish Cup from 1901 to 1908. The club won its way through the qualifying rounds to the competition proper four times, but never reached the second round proper. Palmerston Park
Palmerston Park is a football stadium on Terregles Street in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is the home ground of Scottish League One club Queen of the South, who have played there since 1919. South of Scotland League club Heston Rovers have shared Palmerston since 2013. The stadium has a capacity of of which 3,377 are seats. History Palmerston Park was first opened in 1919, when Queen of the South were formed, although football had been played at the site since the 1870s. The site of the ground was formerly a farm called Palmers Toun. This is on the Maxwelltown side of the River Nith in Dumfries. Jimmy McKinnell, Tom Wylie and Willie McCall were all sold to Blackburn Rovers around the same time by Queen of the South. This combined with the sale of Ian Dickson to Aston Villa helped to fund the purchase of Palmerston Park in 1921 for £1,500. Thomas Gibson was a Scottish professional footballer who made over 180 appearances as a full back in the Football League for Nottingham Forest and captained the club. He also played in the Scottish League for Heart of Midlothian and Morton.
