Maxwell Meighen
Colonel Maxwell Charles Gordon Meighen, OBE (June 5, 1908 – February 5, 1992) was a Canadian financier and the son of Canadian Prime Minister Arthur Meighen. Life and career Meighen was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He graduated from the Royal Military College and the University of Toronto. He served in World War II with the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Europe and retired with the rank of Colonel. He then took over the investment companies founded by his father. In 1961, as chairman and director of Canadian General Investments Ltd., he entered the consortium of financiers, headed by Bud McDougald, that owned the Argus Corporation. As an Argus director, he was also a member of the boards of some of the largest Canadian companies, including Domtar, Massey Ferguson, Dominion Stores and Hollinger Mines. Portage La Prairie
Portage la Prairie () is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area of the city was . Portage la Prairie is approximately west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway (exactly halfway between the provincial boundaries of Saskatchewan and Ontario). The community sits on the Assiniboine River, which flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba (the Portage Diversion) was built to divert the flood waters. Argus Corporation
The Argus Corporation was an investment holding company based in Toronto, Ontario. During the 1960s and 1970s, it was the most powerful and best known conglomerate in Canada, at one time controlling the companies making up 10 percent of all shares traded daily on the Toronto Stock Exchange. At its height in the 1970s, it was a true conglomerate with many unrelated businesses. Among these were Dominion grocery stores, Orange Crush soft drinks, Massey Ferguson farm machinery, Domtar wood products and Carling O'Keefe breweries. The company was purchased by Conrad Black in 1978. Black and his associates sold off most of the Argus assets by 1985, and by 2005 Argus contained only one asset and was itself wholly owned by Black's Ravelston Corporation. Hollinger Mines
The Hollinger Gold Mine was discovered on October 9, 1909, by Benny Hollinger, who found the gold-bearing quartz dike that later became known as Hollinger Mines. With his friend, professional prospector Alex Gillies, Hollinger had travelled to the Porcupine region in the wake of the Wilson expedition, which had recently discovered the future Dome Mine site. Hollinger and Gillies staked three claims each, and one for their former partner, Bernard "Barney" P. McEnaney, who had been unable to join them due to severe sciatica. Hollinger sold his claim to a small syndicate led by Noah Timmins that, in 1910, incorporated as Hollinger Mines in Timmins, Ontario.
