Maximilian Joseph Von Chelius
Maximilian Joseph von Chelius (16 January 1794 – 17 August 1876) was a German surgeon and ophthalmologist born in Mannheim. Chelius received his medical doctorate in 1812 at the University of Heidelberg, and afterwards worked as both a civilian and military physician in Munich. He was an army surgeon in the last phases of the Napoleonic Wars (1814-15). In 1817 he became an associate professor of surgery in Heidelberg, where soon afterwards he gained a full professorship (1819). He was a catalyst in the development of the medical faculty at the University of Heidelberg, being considered the founder of the surgical tradition at the facility. Chelius specialized in the field of ophthalmic surgery. One of his better-known patients was composer Frédéric Chopin, whom Chelius treated for sepsis of the finger. Oskar Von Chelius
Oskar Philipp von Chelius was a Prussian Generalleutnant who served during World War I as an Adjutant of Emperor Wilhelm II and as a military attaché. He also was a composer. Life Military career Oskar von Chelius was born on 28 July 1859 at Mannheim, which was part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. He was the first son of his father, Ernst Philipp von Chelius, and a grandson of Maximilian Joseph von Chelius. The latter was ennobled into the Badian aristorcracy in 1866. In 1881, Chelius entered the Imperial German Army as a Fahnenjunker in the 22nd (3rd Baden) Dragoon Regiment. In 1882, Chelius was appointed as Sekonde-Lieutenant. In 1883, Chelius was transferred to the Life Guards Hussars in Potsdam and later became the regimental adjutant. ''Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie'' (ADB, german: Universal German Biography) is one of the most important and comprehensive biographical reference works in the German language. It was published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences between 1875 and 1912 in 56 volumes, printed in Leipzig by Duncker & Humblot. The ADB contains biographies of about 26,500 people who died before 1900 and lived in the German language Sprachraum of their time, including people from the Netherlands before 1648. Its successor, the '' Neue Deutsche Biographie'', was started in 1953 and is planned to be finished in 2023. Cornea
The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. Along with the anterior chamber and lens, the cornea refracts light, accounting for approximately two-thirds of the eye's total optical power. In humans, the refractive power of the cornea is approximately 43 dioptres. The cornea can be reshaped by surgical procedures such as LASIK. While the cornea contributes most of the eye's focusing power, its focus is fixed. Accommodation (the refocusing of light to better view near objects) is accomplished by changing the geometry of the lens. Staphyloma
A staphyloma is an abnormal protrusion of the uveal tissue through a weak point in the eyeball. The protrusion is generally black in colour, due to the inner layers of the eye. It occurs due to weakening of outer layer of eye (cornea or sclera) by an inflammatory or degenerative condition. It may be of five types, depending on the location on the eyeball (''bulbus oculi''). Anterior (corneal) staphyloma In the anterior segment of the eye, involving the cornea and the nearby sclera.
