Max Uth (BerlLeben 1903-02 Geog Ludwig Meyn)
Gustav Alexander Max Uth (24 November 1863 in Berlin – 15 June 1914 in Hermannswerder, Potsdam) was a German painter of landscapes and art teacher. Uth was the son of a manufacturer and enrolled at the Academy of Art in Berlin under Eugen Bracht. He opened his own atelier for women painters in 1897 in Berlin; among his students were Gertrud Berger (1870–1949), Laura Schaberg (1860 or 1866–1935), Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874–1963) and Emmy Gotzmann (1881-1950). Emmy Gotzmann
Emmy Auguste Elisabeth Gotzmann (19 March 1881 – 27 September 1950) was a painter from Germany and a member of the Ekensund Artists' Colony. Biography Emmy Gotzmann was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1881. She was the daughter of Klara, née Kammer, and Theodor Gotzmann, a director of the Reichsbank. She was educated at the Krahmersche girls' school. In 1901 she studied in Berlin with Max Uth at his school for women painters and at the Association of Berlin Artists where she was taught by Hans Baluschek and Martin Brandenburg. In 1901 and 1902 she went on study trips to Teterow and then to Penzlin, both in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The following year she went to Ekensund. From 1903 to 1909 she was a member of the Ekensund Artists' Colony. She worked with Otto Heinrich Engel who had been in the area since 1896. She painted watercolours. The Berlin Secession was an art movement established in Germany on May 2, 1898. Formed in reaction to the Association of Berlin Artists, and the restrictions on contemporary art imposed by Kaiser Wilhelm II, 65 artists "seceded," demonstrating against the standards of academic or government-endorsed art. The movement is classified as a form of German Modernism, and came on the heels of several other secessions in Germany, including Jugendstil and the Munich Secession. Sophie Wencke-Meinken
Sophie Wencke-Meinken (29 July 1874 in Bremerhaven – 23 June 1963 in Worpswede) was a German painter. Biography Sophie Wencke was the first child of Johanna Sophie and shipyard owner Nicolaus Diedrich Wencke (b. 1848) and granddaughter of shipyard entrepreneurs Gesine Wencke and her husband Friedrich Wilhelm Wencke. In 1884 she christened the first German trawler ''Sagitta'' for the Friedrich Busse shipping company. She attended school in Bremerhaven and studied art painting in Dresden from 1891 to 1893 and in Berlin from 1893 to 1897 with painters such as the animal painter Hermann Pansee, the landscape painter Berta Schrader and in Berlin with the landscape painter Max Uth.
