Mauro Del Vecchio
Corps General Mauro Del Vecchio OMRI (born 7 June 1946) is a former Italian Army general and politician. He commanded the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan from August 2005 to May 2006 and was succeeded by British general David Richards. Life and career Del Vecchio was born in Rome, Italy, and graduated from the Military Academy of Modena in 1967. He attended the specialization school of Turin. He subsequently earned the rank of ''tenente'' was given command of a platoon of Bersaglieri. He eventually became commander of a company of 8th Bersaglieri Regiment. After that he attended the ''Scuola di Guerra'' (School of Warfare) and he was the commander of 1st Battalion of Bersaglieri. Then he was named commander of Florence military district. After his promotion to the rank of ''Generale di Brigata'' he led the infantry brigade ''Garibaldi''. Military Academy Of Modena
The Military Academy of Modena ( it, Accademia militare di Modena) is a military university in Modena, northern Italy. Located in the Palazzo Ducale in the historic center of the city, it was the first such military institution to be created in the world. The academy is open for enrollment to both sexes, and focuses on the initial training and selection of future military officers in the Italian Army or in the Carabinieri. A typical course of study is at least two years in duration. Upon the successful completion of the syllabus, the trainee can then either go on to study another three years at the Military Research Institute of Turin or at the Carabinieri Officer Candidate School in Rome. David Richards, Baron Richards Of Herstmonceux
General David Julian Richards, Baron Richards of Herstmonceux, (born 4 March 1952) is a retired senior British Army officer who was formerly the Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces. He succeeded Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup in this role on 29 October 2010. Richards served in the Far East, Germany and Northern Ireland with the Royal Artillery before commanding forces in East Timor and most notably Sierra Leone, where his action without official sanctioning protected Freetown from rebel attacks during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Richards has also served with NATO as a major general, and as a lieutenant general he commanded the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan between 2006 and 2007 during its expansion across the whole country.
