Maurice O'Shea (hurler)
Maurice O'Shea (27 December 1879 – 14 August 1911) was an Irish hurler who played as a forward with the Cork senior hurling team. He was an All-Ireland Championship winner in 1902. Career O'Shea began his hurling career at club level with Dungourney in East Cork. He played at a time when the club enjoyed its most successful era ever and won Cork Senior Championship titles in 1902, 1907 and 1909. At inter-county level, O'Shea first played for the Cork senior hurling team on 9 August 1903 in what was the delayed 1902 championship. After missing Cork's Munster Championship triumph, he later won an All-Ireland Championship medal after a 3-13 to no score defeat of London at the Cork Athletic Grounds. O'Shea later lined with Cork on a number of occasions before playing his last game on 29 August 1909. O'Shea died in a drowning accident at Lough Carrig Bay in Cork Harbour on 14 August 1911. Dungourney GAA
Dungourney GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Dungourney, County Cork, Ireland. The club fields teams in both Gaelic football and hurling. It is a member of the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. The club was one of the strongest clubs in the Cork during the first decade of the 20th century. Its 3 Cork Senior Hurling Championship titles were the most by a club outside Cork City for many years. The best known player is Jamesy Kelleher who was included on Cork's Hurling Team of the Century. In 1902, the club represented Cork in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. This resulted in the club winning the All-Ireland hurling title. The 1907 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 20th staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. St. Finbarr's were the defending champions. Dungourney won the championship following a 5–17 to 0–3 defeat of Castletownroche in the final. Dungourney Hurlers
Dungourney () is a village in County Cork, Ireland on the R627 regional road northeast of Midleton. The river Dungourney flows through the village. St. Peter's National School is located in the centre. There is a church in the west of the village and a post office across the road. There are several roads linking to Midleton, Castlematyr and Tallow. Sport Dungourney GAA Club and Dungourney Camogie Club are the local Gaelic games clubs. The Fitzgibbon Cup, the hurling competition contested by university teams, is named after Dungourney man Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon. He was born in 1884, and went to school in the area before joining the Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1893. Cork Harbour
Cork Harbour () is a natural harbour and river estuary at the mouth of the River Lee in County Cork, Ireland. It is one of several which lay claim to the title of "second largest natural harbour in the world by navigational area" (after Port Jackson, Sydney). Other contenders include Halifax Harbour in Canada, Trincomalee Harbour in Sri Lanka and Poole Harbour in England. The harbour has been a working port and a strategic defensive hub for centuries, and it has been one of Ireland's major employment hubs since the early 1900s. Cork Athletic Grounds
The Cork Athletic Grounds was a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium where major hurling and football matches were played. Situated in the Ballintemple area of Cork in Ireland, it was the home of Cork GAA between 1904 and 1974. The stadium was demolished in 1974 and replaced by Páirc Uí Chaoimh. History In late 1902 an attempt was made by the Cork County Board of the GAA to provide Cork city with a dedicated athletic stadium. A new company, the Cork Athletic Grounds Committee Ltd., was established under the chairmanship of James Crosbie. The county board invested £30 in the venture and a member of the board was appointed as a director. The subscriptions for the share capital reached sufficient funds, and in early 1903 a lease for six acres was drawn up between the Cork Agricultural Society, the Cork Corporation and the Cork County Board treasurer John FitzGerald. The London County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Londain) or London GAA is one of the county boards outside Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in London. The county board is also responsible for the London county teams and schools. The county football team compete in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship on an annual basis, the only English based team to do so. The 1909 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 22nd staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place on 21 April 1909. The championship began on 9 May 1909 and ended on 25 July 1909. Blackrock were the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Dungourney at the semi-final stage. On 25 July 1909, Dungourney won the championship following a 6–10 to 1–8 defeat of Sarsfields in the final.
