Maurice Charles O'Connell (Australian Politician)
Sir Maurice Charles O'Connell (13 January 1812 – 23 March 1879) was a Queensland pioneer and president of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life O'Connell was born at Sydney in 1812. His father was Sir Maurice Charles O'Connell, his mother was Mary (née Bligh, formerly Putland) a daughter of Governor William Bligh. He was educated at the high school, Edinburgh; Dublin and Paris. Army career O'Connell entered the army as an ensign at 16 and joined the 73rd Regiment at Gibraltar. In 1835 he volunteered for foreign service as colonel with the British Legion in Spain, which he himself had raised in the county of Cork and other parts of Munster, to sustain the cause of the Spanish Queen and constitution against the insurgent Carlists. Later on he became Deputy Adjutant-General, and ultimately succeeded Sir De Lacy Evans as general of brigade in command of the British Auxiliary Legion in Spain. Lieutenant Governor Of New South Wales
The lieutenant-governor of New South Wales is a government position in the state of New South Wales, Australia, acting as a deputy to the governor of New South Wales. The office was first created in October 1786, before the arrival of the First Fleet, to act as a deputy to the first governor, Arthur Phillip. At that time the lieutenant-governor, or its equivalent of "administrator of the government", was filled by military officers and was a position only created when needed or in times of long absences by the governor. Since 1872 this office has been held concurrently by the chief justice of New South Wales but the position may be retained by the chief justice after their retirement from the Supreme Court of New South Wales. British Legion (1835)
The British Auxiliary Legion, also called the British Legion (''La Legión Británica'') or Westminster Legion, existed from 1835 to 1837. It was a British military force sent to Spain to support the Liberals and Queen Isabella II of Spain against the Carlists in the First Carlist War. History Under the Quadruple Alliance, Great Britain had controlled maritime traffic along the Cantabrian coast since the beginning of the war. In 1835 the war was not going well for the Liberal side and they asked their allies to become more involved in the war. The French sent their Foreign Legion which landed at Tarragona on 17 August with around 4,000 men and was renamed the Spanish Legion. Although the British refused to send troops directly, in June 1835, they decided to form a "military volunteer corps", and that became designated an auxiliary to the Spanish Legion. George Harris (Queensland Politician)
George Harris (1831–1891) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life George Harris was born in 1831 in London, England, the son of John Harris and his wife Sarah (née Walton). His family immigrated to Australia when he was two years old. George Harris and his brother John Harris arrived in Brisbane in about 1848. They opened a store in South Brisbane and a warehouse and wharf at Short Street (at the southern end of Alice Street, Brisbane, Alice Street, where Gardens Point Road is today). They traded under the name ''Messrs. J. and G. Harris, merchants''. John Frederick McDougall
John Frederick McDougall (1820—1896) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life John Frederick McDougall was born on 31 August 1820 in Parramatta, New South Wales, the son of John Kerr McDougall and his wife Louisa (née Doyle). He attended The King's School, Parramatta. On 31 July 1846 at St John's Church, Parramatta, McDougall married Catherine Maria D'Arcy, the daughter of Major D'Arcy of the 28th Regiment. The couple had 8 sons and 2 daughters. McDougall arrived in Moreton Bay, Queensland accompanied by Mrs D'Arcy on the steamer ''Shamrock'' on 28 October 1855. McDougall was one of the early pioneers on the Darling Downs where he was the long-time owner of Rosalie pastoral station. Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Port Curtis is a suburb of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Port Curtis had a population of 309 people. Geography The Fitzroy River bounds the suburb to the north-east. Gavial Creek, a tributary of the Fitzroy River, flows through the locality with their confluence at the north of the suburb.
