Maurice Byblow
Maurice John Byblow (June 23, 1946 – February 11, 2020) was a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Faro in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1985 and from 1989 to 1996. Originally elected as an independent, Byblow joined the Yukon New Democratic Party caucus on September 16, 1981. He retired in 1985, and was succeeded by Jim McLachlan. He was re-elected to the legislature in the 1989 election, and served until 1992. He later served as an executive assistant to NDP leader Piers McDonald, and both were implicated in a conflict of interest allegation, although both McDonald and Byblow were eventually cleared. After retiring from politics, Byblow purchased the Capital Hotel in downtown Whitehorse in 1997, and worked as a hotelier until selling the hotel in early 2008. Byblow died on February 11, 2020. Yorkton
Yorkton is a city located in south-eastern Saskatchewan, Canada. It is about 450 kilometres north-west of Winnipeg and 300 kilometres south-east of Saskatoon and is the sixth largest city in the province. As of 2017 the census population of the city was 19,643. Yorkton has had a growth rate of 4.3% since 2011. Yorkton was founded in 1882 and incorporated as a city in 1928. The city is bordered by the rural municipalities of Orkney to the north, west, and south, and Wallace on the east. Piers McDonald
Piers McDonald, OC (born August 4, 1955) is a Yukon politician and businessman. Born in Kingston, Ontario, McDonald, originally a miner by profession, is a long-time MLA, Cabinet minister, and the fifth premier of Yukon. He was leader of the Yukon New Democratic Party from 1995 to 2000. Post-politics, McDonald became a businessman and community developer. He is a founding member, and currently chair, of Northern Vision Development, which has focused on residential and property revitalization, commercial real estate, and hospitality services in Yukon. He was also the chancellor of Yukon University from 2016 to 2020. The Yukon Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Yukon) is a political party in the territory of Yukon, Canada. The party is not organizationally linked to the federal Liberal Party of Canada in any official manner. Sandy Silver, MLA for Klondike, is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and Premier of Yukon. History After twenty years as a minor party, the Yukon Liberal Party won the 2000 general election and formed a government under Premier Pat Duncan. The government, however, was reduced to minority government status. Duncan called a snap election for November 2002 in the hope of regaining her government's majority. Stuart McCall (February 11, 1942 – January 26, 2002) was a Canadian politician who served on the Yukon Territorial Council, representing the electoral district of Pelly River from 1974 to 1978."Former MLA never retreated from a battle". He settled in Faro, Yukon, working in the local mines and rising to become a leader in the labour union local. The 1978 Yukon general election was held on November 20, 1978, was the first conventional legislative election in the history of Canada's Yukon Territory. Prior elections were held to elect representatives to the Yukon Territorial Council, a non-partisan body that acted in an advisory role to the Commissioner of the Yukon. Following the passage of the Yukon Elections Act in 1977, the 1978 election was the first time that voters in the Yukon elected representatives to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in an election organized along political party lines. Hilda Watson, the first woman ever to lead a political party into an election in Canada, was the leader of the Progressive Conservatives. The ''Whitehorse Star'' is one of two newspapers in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. When founded in 1900 it appeared only once a week, and its progress to Monday through Friday publication occurred in fits and starts; it was issued twice a week for a time, and then three times a week in the 1960s and five times a week from around 1980 to 1982. In 1982, the paper changed to publishing three times a week. The paper returned to publishing five times a week in 1985 until 2019. It is presently an afternoon newspaper, usually available after 3 p.m.; its cover price is $1.00. Whitehorse, Yukon
Whitehorse () is the capital of Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. Whitehorse's downtown and Riverdale areas occupy both shores of the Yukon River, which rises in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. The city was named after the White Horse Rapids for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse, near Miles Canyon, before the river was dammed. Because of the city's location in the Whitehorse valley and relative proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the climate is milder than comparable northern communities such as Yellowknife.
