Mauretania Comics
''Mauretania Comics'' is an independent comic, originally published by Paul Harvey and Chris Reynolds. Reynolds' main character is the mysterious 'Monitor', a strange helmeted figure, while Harvey's is the more blatant 'Mincer'. The stories are mainly quiet, distant pieces, as if peering into other people's lives. A Chris Reynolds graphic novel simply entitled ''Mauretania'' was commissioned by Penguin Books in 1990. Though an original story made up the bulk of the volume, ''Mauretania'' also reprinted several of Reynolds' short stories from ''Mauretania Comics''. Alternative comics cover a range of American comic book, American comics that have appeared since the 1980s, following the underground comix movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Alternative comics present an alternative to mainstream superhero comics which in the past have dominated the American comic book industry. Paul Harvey (artist)
Paul Arthur Harvey (born 7 May 1960) is a British musician and Stuckist artist, whose work was used to promote the Stuckists' 2004 show at the Liverpool Biennial.Milner, Frank ed. ''The Stuckists Punk Victorian'', p.74, National Museums Liverpool 2004. His paintings draw on pop art and the work of Alphonse Mucha, and often depict celebrities, including Madonna. Life and career Paul Harvey was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. He attended Burton Grammar School (1971–1978) and North Staffordshire Polytechnic (1978–1982) for Foundation Art and BA (Hons) Design. In 1982, he moved to London and played in post-punk bands including Happy Refugees; in 1986 he moved to Newcastle to join Pauline Murray's band. Chris Reynolds (16 July 1960 – 4 May 2023) was a Welsh comics author who created and produced his Mauretania Comics, ''Mauretania'' comics from the mid-1980s, including a homonymous full-length graphic novel published by Penguin Books in 1990. In 2005, Canadian author Seth (cartoonist), Seth considered him "the most underrated cartoonist of the last 20 years". An anthology of his works was published to critical acclaim by New York Review Books in 2018. Reynolds died on 4 May 2023, at the age of 62. A graphic novel is a long-form, fictional work of sequential art. The term ''graphic novel'' is often applied broadly, including fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work, though this practice is highly contested by comic scholars and industry professionals. It is, at least in the United States, typically distinct from the term ''comic book'', which is generally used for comics periodicals and trade paperbacks (see American comic book).
