Maurer, Perth Amboy
Maurer is residential neighbourhood and industrial district of Perth Amboy in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its name is derived from the "company town" built there in 1876. It is north of the Route 440 approach to the Outerbridge Crossing and south of the Perth Amboy Refinery, which began in 1920 as the Barber Asphalt Company. For a time it was known as Barber, a name which has fallen out of use The eastern area along the waterfront was active during World War II in building and decommissioning ships for the U.S. Navy. One of the primary ship builders during World War II was the New Jersey Shipbuilding Company. The community also housed the American Smelting and Refining Company. Route 440 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States. It comprises two segments, a freeway in Middlesex County linking Interstate 287 (I-287) and the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), in Edison to the Outerbridge Crossing in Perth Amboy and a four-lane divided highway in Hudson County running from the Bayonne Bridge in Bayonne to U.S. Route 1/9 Truck (US 1-9 Truck) in Jersey City. Outerbridge Crossing
The Outerbridge Crossing, also known as the Outerbridge, is a cantilever bridge that spans the Arthur Kill between Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York. It carries New York State Route 440 (NY 440) and New Jersey Route 440, with the two roads connecting at the state border near the bridge's center. Perth Amboy Refinery
The Perth Amboy Refinery is a refinery built in 1920. It is between Convery Boulevard and State Street in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, adjacent to the Outerbridge Crossing. Via rail it is served by Conrail's Chemical Coast and the former Perth Amboy and Woodbridge lines. Oil tankers and lighter can reach the refinery along the Arthur Kill. History The refinery opened in 1920, by the Barber Asphalt Company. Chevron Corporation acquired the Perth Amboy Refinery in 1945. In 1983 the refinery stopped production of gasoline and heating oil and concentrated on asphalt refining. A spill occurred in 2006 that resulted in approximately 31,000 gallons of oil released. Barber Asphalt Company
Barber Asphalt Company of Washington, D.C. started in 1883 was founded by Amzi L. Barber. Barber, born in 1843. Barber first career was a teaching professor, he moved to real estate. In real estate, he found the problem of needing affordable paved roads. He found that asphalt was a great affordable material for paved roads. He added asphalt shingles to his products. In 1879 he moved Headquarters to New York City. He had offices in Washington, D.C. from 1878 to 1912, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1912 to 1938 and Maurer, Perth Amboy, New Jersey from 1938 to 1948. In 1888 Barber leased the largest know asphalt deposit at Pitch Lake Trinidad. Barber opened a subsidiary, called the Iroquois division, and Iroquois Electric Refrigeration Company.
