Maurencia Gillion
Maurencia Natalie Gillion (died 28 February 2023) was a South African politician who served as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of the South African Parliament. She was a member of the Western Cape provincial delegation, representing the African National Congress (ANC). She was also the chairperson of the legislature's Select Committee on Health and Social Services. Gillion served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2014 to 2019. Political career She was the Executive Mayor of the Overberg District Municipality between 2006 and 2010. Gillion then served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2014 to 2019. Within the ANC, she served as the party's deputy provincial secretary from 2011 to 2015 and as the party's provincial treasurer from 2015 to 2019. National Council Of Provinces
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is the upper house of the Parliament of South Africa under the (post-apartheid) constitution which came into full effect in 1997. It replaced the former Senate, but is very similar to that body, and to many other upper houses of legislatures throughout the world, in that its purpose is to represent the governments of the provinces, rather than directly representing the people. Composition The NCOP consists of ninety delegates, ten delegates for each of the nine provinces regardless of the population of the province. Each province is equally represented in the NCOP. A provincial delegation is composed of six permanent delegates and four special delegates. The party representation in the delegation must proportionally reflect the party representation in the provincial legislature, based on a formula included in the Constitution. Western Cape
The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, situated on the south-western coast of the country. It is the fourth largest of the nine provinces with an area of , and the third most populous, with an estimated 7 million inhabitants in 2020. Overberg District Municipality
The Overberg District Municipality is a district municipality that governs the Overberg region in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is divided into four local municipalities and includes the major towns of Grabouw, Caledon, Hermanus, Bredasdorp and Swellendam. The municipal area covers and had in 2007 an estimated population of 212,787 people in 60,056 households. Geography The Overberg municipal area covers lying to the south-east of Cape Town.
