Maura Laverty
Maura Laverty (née Kelly; 15 May 1907 – 26 July 1966) was an Irish novelist, playwright, journalist, broadcaster and cookery expert known for her work on the Irish television drama serial, ''Tolka Row''. She published several novels, short stories and critical pieces throughout her career. Life Family Maura Laverty was born Maura Kelly in Rathangan, County Kildare on 15 May 1907. She was educated at the Brigidine Convent in Tullow, County Carlow. She had intended to train to become a teacher, but she abandoned these plans after the death of her grandmother. She later moved to Spain in November 1924, taking up the position of governess and later secretary to Princess Bibesco and eventually becoming a foreign correspondent based within Madrid. Laverty returned to Ireland for the remainder of her career and worked as a journalist and broadcaster in Dublin for the national radio station, Radio Éireann. Tolka Row
''Tolka Row'' was an Irish Drama (film and television), drama serial set in a fictional housing estate on the Northside (Dublin), northside of Dublin. Based on Maura Laverty's play of the same name, ''Tolka Row'' was first broadcast on 3 January 1964 and aired weekly for five series until it ended on 31 May 1968. As RTÉ, Telefís Éireann's first venture into soap operas, ''Tolka Row'' quickly became a staple of the new television station's schedule and set the pace for all future home-produced serials. Its popularity also resulted in the station developing a second soap opera, ''The Riordans'', in 1965. ''Tolka Row'' is similar in format to the long-running British soap ''Coronation Street'', from which it borrows its main premise (the everyday life of a number of neighbours). The Gate Theatre is a Theater (structure), theatre on Cavendish Row in Dublin, Ireland. It was founded in 1928. History Beginnings The Gate Theatre was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir with Daisy Bannard Cogley and Gearóid Ó Lochlainn. During their first season, they presented seven plays, including Ibsen's Peer Gynt, O’Neill's The Hairy Ape and Wilde's Salomé.
