Mauley Cross
Baron de Mauley, of Canford in the County of Dorset, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 10 July 1838 for the Whig politician the Hon. William Ponsonby, who had earlier represented Poole, Knaresborough and Dorset in the House of Commons. He was the third son of the 3rd Earl of Bessborough, an Anglo-Irish peer, and the husband of Lady Barbara Ashley-Cooper, one of the co-heirs to the ancient barony by writ of Mauley (or Maulay), which superseded the feudal barony the ''caput'' of which was at Mulgrave Castle, Yorkshire, which barony by writ had become extinct in 1415. His son, later the second Baron, sat as Member of Parliament for Poole and Dungarvon. , the title is held by the latter's great-great-grandson, the seventh Baron, who succeeded his uncle in 2002. Canford
Canford Magna is a village in Dorset, England. The village is situated just south of the River Stour and lies between the towns of Wimborne Minster and Poole. The village has a mixture of thatch and brick buildings, mostly serving as residences for teaching staff. The western edge of the village merges with the residential suburb of Merley and the village community of Oakley. The village school was built in 1866 and now serves as the youth club for Canford and Merley. Canford School Canford School, a private boarding school is located in the village. The school was previously the mansion and estate of Lord Wimborne. A golf club lies on the edge of the village and the school. Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Charles Ponsonby, 7th Baron de Mauley, (born 30 June 1957), is a British hereditary peer, former Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and retired Territorial Army officer. Myles Walter Ponsonby CBE (12 September 1924 – 1 February 1999), was a British soldier, intelligence officer, diplomat and politician. He was Ambassador to Mongolia from 1974 to 1977. John Ponsonby (RAF Officer)
Air Vice-Marshal John Maurice Maynard Ponsonby, (8 August 1955 – 21 October 2022) was a British businessman and a senior officer of the Royal Air Force. Sir Charles Edward Ponsonby, 1st Baronet Deputy lieutenant, DL (2 September 1879 – 28 January 1976), was a British Conservative Party (UK), conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons from 1935 to 1950. Ashley Ponsonby
The Hon. Ashley George John Ponsonby (24 June 1831 – 12 January 1898) was a British Liberal politician. Background Ponsonby was a younger son of William Ponsonby, 1st Baron de Mauley, third son of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough. His mother was Lady Barbara, daughter of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 5th Earl of Shaftesbury. Political and military career Ponsonby sat as Member of Parliament for Cirencester between 1852 and 1857 and again between 1859 and 1865. He was also a captain in the Grenadier Guards and a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. Family Ponsonby married Louisa Frances Charlotte, daughter of Lord Henry Gordon, in 1857. They had two sons and one daughter. He died in January 1898, aged 66. His wife died in February 1910.
