Fox Maule-Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie, (22 April 18016 July 1874), known as Fox Maule before 1852, as The Lord Panmure between 1852 and 1860, was a British politician. Ancestry Dalhousie was the eldest son of William Maule, 1st Baron Panmure, and a grandson of George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie. Christened Fox as a compliment to Charles James Fox, the great Whig, he served for a term in the Army. Early life and career Fox Maule was born in Brechin Castle, on 22 April 1801. He was educated at the Charter House, London. In 1819 he received his commission as ensign in the 79th Regiment of Cameron Highlanders. For some years he served in Canada on the staff of his uncle, the Earl of Dalhousie. In 1831, having attained to the rank of captain, he retired from the army, and having married the Hon. Sir John Blossett Maule, QC (1818–1889) was a British barrister who served as the first Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales. Life The second son of the Solicitor to the Treasury George Maule, Esquire, of London, Maule was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered the Inner Temple on 13 January 1844, aged twenty-six, was called to the bar on 29 January 1847, and was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1866. Director Of Public Prosecutions (England And Wales)
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the third most senior public prosecutor in England and Wales, ranking after the attorney general and solicitor general. First created in 1879, the office was merged with that of the Treasury Solicitor five years later, before again becoming independent in 1908. The director's department and role underwent modernisation from 1944 to 1964 under Sir Theobald Mathew QC, and further expansion with the introduction of the CPS in 1985, which came under the authority of the director. Today, the incumbent bears personal responsibility for 7,000 CPS staff and the approximately 800,000 prosecutions undertaken by it every year. The director reports to the attorney general, who answers for the CPS in Parliament and makes appointments to the position, in the case of vacancy, on the recommendation of panels that include the Civil Service Commission. John Maule (MP)
John Maule (1706 – 2 July 1781), of Inverkeilor, Forfarshire, was a Scottish Whig politician who sat in the British House of Commons from 1739 to 1748. Maule was the second surviving son of Harry Maule, of Kellie, Forfar and his second wife Anne Lindsay, daughter of Patrick Lindsay of Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. His father was shire commissioner in the Parliament of Scotland. He was half brother to William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure. Maule was secretary to Lord Ilay, later Duke of Argyll, who was manager of elections in Scotland for Walpole and the Pelhams. In 1737 Maule was appointed Keeper of Register of Sasines. He was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Aberdeen Burghs at a by election on 8 June 1739 and supported the administration. He was elected again at the 1741 British general election but at the time of the second Jacobite rebellion of 1745 came under suspicion of being a Jacobite because of his ancestry. June De Etta Maule (February 1, 1917 – October 29, 2009) was an American businesswoman. Maule was the owner and manager of Maule Air, a manufacturer of light, single-engined STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft headquartered in Moultrie, Georgia. Life June Aderhold was born in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. She married her husband, Belford D. Maule (1911–1995), in 1934. The couple remained together both in marriage and as business partners until his death in 1995. June Maule took an active role in her husband's company, helping to both sell and develop Maule Air's aircraft. The couple jointly ran the day-to-day operations of the company. She took over the company after her husband's death and remained actively involved with the factory and its productions until her death in 2009. Lauderdale Maule
Lauderdale Maule, DL (27 March 1807 – 1 August 1854) was a Scottish soldier, the second son of the Lord Panmure. Life Born at Brechin Castle, he entered the 39th Regiment of Foot as an ensign on 24 August 1825. In 1835, he was promoted to captain in the 95th Regiment of Foot, and transferred into the 79th Regiment of Foot on 21 August 1835. He was promoted major in 1840 and lieutenant-colonel on 14 June 1842 after succeeding to command of the 79th. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Forfarshire in 1850, and was Member of Parliament for that shire from 1852 until 1854. He retired from the Army in 1852, but was appointed Surveyor-General of the Ordnance on 15 January 1853. During the Crimean War, while carrying out his duties at Varna, he contracted cholera, and died of the disease in a military hospital in Constantinople. Peter Maule
Sir Peter Maule (died 1254) was the eldest son of Richard Maule of Fowlis. He married Christina de Valognes, daughter and heiress of William de Valognes around 1224, passing the baronies of Panmure and Benvie into the Maule family. Peter Maule is thought to have built Panmure Castle around 1224. Panmure Castle was the ancestral home of the Maule family until it was replaced by Panmure House in the 17th century, although it was destroyed by Andrew Murray during the Second War of Scottish Independence in 1336. Hamilton Prieleaux Bee Maule, commonly known as Tex Maule (May 19, 1915 in Ojus, Florida – May 16, 1981) was the lead American football writer for ''Sports Illustrated'' in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Thomas Maule (Quaker)
Thomas Maule (May 3, 1645 – July 2, 1724), was a prominent Quaker in colonial Salem, Massachusetts. Maule was born in Berkswell Parish, Warwickshire, England. He originally emigrated to Barbados around 1658 and later relocated to Boston in 1668 before permanently settling in Salem about 1679. He remained in Salem until his death in 1724 at the age of 79. Maule was a tailor in Boston, and later expanded his business to general merchandising. He also dealt in construction and real estate while in Salem. It is unknown precisely when Maule converted to Quakerism, although it is suspected his conversion happened while he lived in Barbados. Maule's son Thomas was born in 1720 in Salem, apprenticed as a carpenter, and by 1744 relocated with his mother Sarah and her second husband Henry Clifton (m. 1733) to Philadelphia.
