Mauger (French Name)
Mauger is a Norman surname of Germanic origin (possibly meaning 'council-spear'). It was used first as a given name in the Middle Ages. pronunciation API : French oʒe(Old French aʷdʒɘʁ ; English meɪ.dʒ.ə(ɹ) Etymology The second element of the name ''-ger'' is from Germanic ''gari'' "spear" (see Roger, Gerard, etc.), while the first element ''Mau-'', is a short form for ''Madal-'', which is ultimately from Germanic ''*maþl-'' "assembly, council" (Old High German ''mahal'', Anglo-Saxon ''mæðl'' "council, assembly"). The Old Norman form was ''Malger''. In fact, it could recover an Old Scandinavian given name, like many other Norman first names (Anfray, Angot, etc.) in the Middle Ages. The Old Norse form for ''madal'' was ''mál'' "speech, law-suit" and the given name was perhaps ''*Málgeir'', which has survived as ''Málgeir'' in Icelandic, if it is not a new created name. The Old Danish nickname ''Malti'' could be related to it, as a short form of the Germanic nam ...

Mauger (Archbishop Of Rouen)
Mauger (or ''Malger'' according to the '' Gesta Normannorum Ducum'') was born around 1019 near Dieppe. He was the younger son of Richard II, Duke of Normandy, and his second wife, Papia of Envermeu. Mauger was brought up at the abbey of Fécamp as an eminent member of the ducal family, some of whom were later openly hostile to the accession of Duke William II. On the death of his uncle Robert, Archbishop of Rouen in 1037, Mauger, who was only 18 was chosen to succeed him. Mauger was apparently slow to instill loyalty to the young Duke William. In particular, he was opposed to the marriage of Duke William and Matilda of Flanders in 1049. His full brother William of Talou married a sister of the Count of Ponthieu and was appointed by William as Count of Arques, near Dieppe. William of Talou, Mauger's brother, was defeated in a failed rebellion against their nephew Duke William in battle near Arques in 1053, after which the former fled into exile at Boulogne. Mauger Of Hauteville
Mauger of Hauteville (also Latin ''Malgerius'' or Italian ''Maugerio'') was a younger (probably the second) son of Tancred of Hauteville by his second wife, Fressenda. He travelled to the Mezzogiorno with his brother William and his elder half-brother Geoffrey around 1053, though some sources indicate him coming later, c.1056. He soon distinguished himself and was invested with the county of the Capitanate soon after his arrival (either 1053 or 1057) by Humphrey, his half brother and count of Apulia, but he did not long survive to hold it. According to Goffredo Malaterra, he died in 1054, though other chroniclers have him dying in 1057 or as late as 1060, after assisting his elder full brother Robert Guiscard, Humphrey's successor, in an expedition against the new army of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine X, sent to recover Langobardia. Whenever he died, his fief went to William, who passed it to Geoffrey out of fraternal affection (according to Malaterra). Sources *Chalandon ...

Mauger (Jamaican Patois Term)
Mauger, the Jamaican Patois word for 'meagre', is a term used in rural Jamaica for a thin woman. In Jamaica, plumpness is considered to be important or vital to good health. The desired body is plump, full of vital bodily fluids, and the flow of substances through the body is maintained, both of which are contributing factors to good health. Any disruption in this flow or lack of bodily fluids is considered to be unhealthy and contributes to sickness. Being thin is associated with bad health, and is a factor which affects social relationships. According to Elis J. Sobo, "A slim person, especially a slim woman, is called a mauger - meagre and powerless - as if not alive at all, and like a mummy or an empty husk, far beyond that powerfully dangerous state of decay. A thin, dry body reveals a person's non-nurturant nature and his or her lack of social commitment" (p. 262). Cultural Beliefs Being plump is associated with good social relationships, and thin person (mauger) is associ ...
