Maturango Peak is the highest mountain in the Argus Range. It is located in Inyo County, California and reaches an elevation of . The area is under the control of the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and access is restricted. Origin of the name The name “Maturango” first appeared in 1877 on the Wheeler Survey Map. Argus Range
The Argus Range is a mountain range located in Inyo County, California, southeast of the town of Darwin, California, Darwin. The range forms the western boundary of Panamint Valley, and the northwestern boundary of Searles Valley. The Coso Range is located to the west, and the Panamint Range to the east. Geography The Argus Range is one of the westernmost of the Basin and Range Province ranges. The northern end of the range is just south of the Panamint Springs, California, Panamint Springs Resort on California State Route 190, Highway 190. Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake is a large military installation in California that supports the research, testing and evaluation programs of the United States Navy. Wheeler Survey
The Wheeler Survey, carried out in 1872-1879, was one of the "Four Great Surveys" conducted by the US government after the Civil War primarily to document the geology and natural resources of the American West. Supervised by First Lieutenant (later Captain) George Montague Wheeler, the Wheeler Survey documented and mapped the United States west of the 100th meridian. The survey team included Lieutenant (later Brigadier General) Montgomery M. Macomb. Wheeler led early expeditions from 1869 to 1871 in the West, and in 1872 the US Congress authorized an ambitious plan to map the portion of the United States west of the 100th meridian at a scale of eight miles to the inch.
