Mattie McDonagh
Matthew "Mattie" McDonagh (1936 – 11 April 2005) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Ballygar and at senior level for the Galway county team from 1956 until 1968. McDonagh later served as manager of the Galway team. He is the only man from Connacht with four All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winner's medals. Breheny, Martin. Ballygar () is a village in County Galway, Ireland. It is 19 km from Roscommon town. History Name and origins The name ''Ballygar'', historically ''Beallagarr'', comes from . The settlement has been a meeting point of the McDermott clan and trading centre throughout the centuries and was recorded as a townland and farm as far back as 1585. Although the townland and farm are recorded as far back as 1585, it was not until the 1820s that it became a centre of population. On 6 August 1585, the chieftains and landowners of Galway and Roscommon were summoned to a meeting with the Lord Deputy, Sir John Perrot, in Galway city. The object of the meeting was to get the landowners and chieftains to surrender their lands to Elizabeth I and then receive them back from the Crown at a rent of one penny an acre. Dunmore McHales
Dunmore MacHales GAA ( ga, CLG Dún Mhór Mhic Eil) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of Galway GAA. Teams at underage and Intermediate level play in the Galway League and Championships. Though the McHales are the first team to have won the Galway Senior Championship in 1889 the club has not won the Frank Fox cup in almost four decades, last winning the championship in 1983. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat). Seán Kelly (Irish Politician)
Seán Kelly (born 26 April 1952) is an Irish politician who has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Republic of Ireland, Ireland for the South (European Parliament constituency), South constituency since July 2009. He is a member of Fine Gael, part of the European People's Party. He served as the 34th President of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 2003 to 2006. He was the first person from County Kerry to hold the office, being elected at his first attempt by a record margin at the GAA Congress in 2002. Willie Joe Padden
Willie Joe Padden is a former Gaelic footballer who received two GAA GPA All Stars Awards, All Stars awards, and represented Mayo county football team, Mayo in an 1989 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final, 1989 All-Ireland SFC Final but lost to Cork county football team, Cork. His son Billy Joe Padden, Billy Joe also played for Mayo. Willie Joe was born in Belmullet on 6 February 1959. He attended his local primary school in Aughalsheen just outside Belmullet.
