Matthew Mead (poet)
Matthew Mead (1924 in Buckinghamshire – 2009) was an English poet as well as a translator, with his wife Ruth, of German poets, including Johannes Bobrowski and Nelly Sachs. He edited the magazine ''Satis'' and lived in Germany. A selection of his poems appears in ''Penguin Modern Poets 16'', together with Harry Guest and Jack Beeching. His first book of poetry was ''Identities'' (1967) an exciting consummation of his concern with 'our time', with poetic experiment, and with 'the single poetic theme'. Matthew Mead (politician)
Matthew Mead (August 20, 1736 – February 26, 1816) was a Lieutenant Colonel who served on George Washington's staff in the American Revolutionary War. He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from Norwalk in the sessions of May 1779, May and October 1780, May and October 1781. Early life and family He was born on August 20, 1736, in Norwalk. He was the son of Jeremiah Mead and Hannah St. John. Mead enlisted in the army on September 8, 1755, as a private in Captain Samuel Hanford's Company, French and Indian War. In 1758 he was Quartermaster of the 4th Regiment in the expedition against Crown Point and Ticonderoga. He married Phebe Whelpey on February 7, 1759, in Wilton. In 1773 he was commissioned Captain of the Wilton company in the Norwalk, Connecticut Militia. At the outbreak of the Revolution he was commissioned Captain of the 5th Regiment of Connecticut, Continental Line. In 1777 he was made Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Regiment. In that year he ... Matthew Mead (minister)
Matthew Mead or Meade (c. 1630 – 16 October 1699) was an English Independent minister. Early life The second son of Richard Mead of Mursley, Buckinghamshire, by his wife Joane, he was born about 1630 at Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. In 1648 he was elected scholar, and on 6 August 1649 admitted a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. He resigned on 6 June 1651, William Cole says to avoid expulsion, owing perhaps to refusal of the engagement; but he had gained ill-will by urging the expulsion of Richard Johnson and others. In search of a position Francis Charlett, rector of Great Brickhill, Buckinghamshire, died in 1653; Mead hoped to succeed him, but the patron, John Duncombe, presented Thomas Clutterbuck. Mead, on the ground that the patron's right had lapsed, obtained a presentation under the Great Seal. Duncombe appealed to the law, and a verdict for Clutterbuck was given at the Aylesbury assizes.
