Matter (music Magazine)
''Matter'' was a Chicago "music magazine" (or more appropriately a punk zine) founded in January 1983. It published 15 issues, one every two to five months, through June 1986. Each issue had from 20 to 40 pages of content, printed on 8-1/2" x 11" heavy, semi-gloss paper, in black and white. Starting with issue 4, the cover had one additional color, always on the front, sometimes on the back advertisement. The entire publication contained about 1000 pieces of editorial content. The editor and publisher of all 15 issues was Elizabeth Phillip. Contributors included Steve Albini, Ira Kaplan, Jim DeRogatis, and Glenn Sarvady. Originally out of Evanston, Illinois, the magazine moved to Hoboken, New Jersey with issue #10, Sep/Oct. 1984. Until the last issue, the magazine dispensed with page numbers, and none had tables of contents. Greg Kot
Greg Kot (born March 3, 1957) is an American music journalist and author. From 1990 until 2020, Kot was the rock music critic at the ''Chicago Tribune'', where he covered popular music and reported on music-related social, political and business issues. Kot co-hosts the radio program ''Sound Opinions'', which introduces itself as "the world's only rock 'n' roll talk show", nationally syndicated through Chicago Public Radio, WBEZ. A native of Syracuse, New York, Kot graduated from Marquette University. Kot started his career at the Quad City Times in Davenport, Iowa in June 1978 and then joined the Chicago Tribune in 1980. He was named the paper's rock music critic in 1990, and held that job until taking a buyout from the Tribune in early 2020. Kot has co-hosted the radio show ''Sound Opinions'' since its 1993 launch. The show is syndicated to about 150 radio stations nationwide and also exists as a weekly podcast. In 2020, Chicago's WBEZ terminated its production agreement with ... Punk Zines
A punk zine (or punkzine) is a zine related to the punk subculture and hardcore punk music genre. Often primitively or casually produced, they feature punk literature, such as social commentary, punk poetry, news, gossip, music reviews and articles about punk rock bands or regional punk scenes. History 1970s: origins Starting in the 1970s, the DIY aesthetic of the punk subculture created a thriving underground press. Amateur magazines related to punk were inspired by the rock fanzines of the early 1970s, which were inspired by zines from the science fiction fan community. Perhaps the most influential of the fanzines to cross over from science fiction fandom to rock and, later, punk rock and new wave music was Greg Shaw's '' Who Put the Bomp'', founded in 1970.
