Matthew Murray (1765 – 20 February 1826) was an English steam engine and machine tool manufacturer, who designed and built the first commercially viable steam locomotive, the twin cylinder ''Salamanca'' in 1812. He was an innovative designer in many fields, including steam engines, machine tools and machinery for the textile industry. Early years Little is known about Matthew Murray's early years. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1765. He left school at fourteen and was apprenticed to be either a blacksmith or a whitesmith. In 1785, when he concluded his apprenticeship, he married Mary Thompson (1764–1836) of Whickham, County Durham. The following year he moved to Stockton and began work as a journeyman mechanic at the flax mill of John Kendrew in Darlington, where the mechanical spinning of flax had been invented.. The Rev Matthew Murray FRSE (1735-1791) was an 18th-century Scottish minister and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Life He was born in North Berwick in 1735 the son of Rev George Murray and his wife Anna Reid. He was licensed to preach in 1756. He originally preached in Haddington but in 1758 he replaced his father in his home town of North Berwick, remaining there for the rest of his life. In 1784 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Matthew Murray (born June 10, 1976) is an American theatre critic and technology writer, best known for his reviews of New York theater on TalkinBroadway.com and his articles for the Ziff-Davis family of computer magazines. He is a nominator for the Theater World Awards and at one time also for the Drama Desk Awards. Early life and education Murray grew up in Bellingham, Washington, where he became interested in computers and technology. Matthew Michael Murray (born September 26, 1970) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox during the season. Matthew William Murray (born 2 May 1981) is an English former football goalkeeper. He spent his entire career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, making precisely 100 appearances, including one in the Premier League. His career was curtailed by numerous injuries, and he retired at the age of 29. Matthew Murray (born May 25, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). Murray was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (83rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. In 2016, Murray won his first Stanley Cup championship as the starting goaltender for the Penguins during the playoffs after having replaced then-starter Marc-André Fleury.
