Matt Brennan (academic)
Matt Brennan (born 1979) is an author, musician, and academic whose work focuses on popular music and society. He is Professor of Popular Music at the University of Glasgow. Career and publications Brennan's research has garnered significant press coverage, particularly his work on the cost of recorded music and the value of the live music sector. His first monograph, ''When Genres Collide,'' was named as one of music website Pitchfork's "Favourite Music Books of 2017" and earned an Honorable Mention in the Association of American Publishers’ PROSE Awards for best "Music and Performing Arts" book. His second monograph, ''Kick It: A Social History of the Drum Kit'', was named as one of the 'Best Music Books of 2020' by the Financial Times. Chemikal Underground
Chemikal Underground is an independent record label set up in 1994 at Glasgow, Scotland by rock band The Delgados. It was set up to release their first single, "Monica Webster" / "Brand New Car" and went on to break many new Scottish bands in the nineties. When the second Chemikal Underground release by Bis, ''The Secret Vampire Soundtrack EP'' was successful, earning them a slot on ''Top of the Pops'', the label was able to expand. To date, ''The Secret Vampire Soundtrack'' is the only Top 40 hit released on Chemikal Underground. Further success followed with the debut albums by Mogwai and Arab Strap. Other bands on the Chemikal Underground roster included Magoo, Aereogramme, Cha Cha Cohen, Sluts of Trust, Suckle, the Radar Brothers and more recently Mother and the Addicts and De Rosa, as well as Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton's solo work. Zoey Van Goey
Zoey Van Goey were an indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, made up of Matt Brennan, Michael John McCarthy, Kim Moore and Adam Scott. Brennan, McCarthy and Moore, hailing from Canada, Ireland and England respectively, formed the initial trio in Glasgow in 2006, with Scott becoming a full-fledged member in 2010. The band stopped performing in 2012. The band's debut single, "Foxtrot Vandals," was produced by the Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch, and released on seven-inch vinyl in 2007. They released another single, "Sweethearts in Disguise," on seven-inch vinyl in 2008 which was produced by Paul Savage of The Delgados. Their debut album, ''The Cage Was Unlocked All Along'', also produced by Savage, was first self-released in 2009 and then re-released by Chemikal Underground Records. God Help The Girl (film)
''God Help the Girl'' is a 2014 British musical romantic drama film written and directed by Stuart Murdoch of the band Belle and Sebastian. It follows three friends who form a band in Glasgow. The film was preceded by an album of the same name released in 2009. It received mixed reviews. Plot Eve escapes from the psychiatric hospital where she is being treated for anorexia nervosa and makes her way to Glasgow, hoping to become a musician. At a gig, she meets James, a lifeguard and aspiring songwriter. He introduces her to his guitar student Cassie, and the three become friends. Eve meets Anton, the arrogant singer of a Glasgow band attracting attention from a local radio station. She gives him a tape of her music to pass on and they begin seeing each other.
