Matt Benney
Cecil Henry "Matt" Benney (6 July 1902–12 December 1980) was a New Zealand civil servant and politician. Biography Early life Benney was born at Kaumati in the Hauraki district in 1902. He came from a family closely associated with mining, his father was the manager of the Golden Dawn Mining Company in Waihi, and his grandfather was also in charge of gold mines in Hauraki. He was educated at Komata School and then Thames High School winning a university scholarship. He married Phyllis Marjorie Jenkins in 1928 with whom he had one son, David Benney, David, who went on to become a groundbreaking mathematician. Public career He joined the civil service in 1919 gaining employment at the Wellington offices of the Mines Department. In 1926 he finished his professional accountancy examinations at Wellington High School, New Zealand, Wellington Technical College. Mayor Of Wellington
The Mayor of Wellington is the head of the municipal government of the City of Wellington. The mayor presides over the Wellington City Council. The mayor is directly elected using the Single Transferable Vote method of proportional representation. The current mayor is Tory Whanau, elected in October 2022 for a three-year-term. Whanau, a member of the Green Party who ran as an independent, won the 2022 Wellington mayoral election in a landslide. She will be inaugurated within the same month. King Country
The King Country (Māori: ''Te Rohe Pōtae'' or ''Rohe Pōtae o Maniapoto'') is a region of the western North Island of New Zealand. It extends approximately from the Kawhia Harbour and the town of Otorohanga in the north to the upper reaches of the Whanganui River in the south, and from the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto Ranges in the east to near the Tasman Sea in the west. It comprises hill country, large parts of which are forested. The region, albeit loosely defined, is very significant in New Zealand's history. Benneydale
Maniaiti / Benneydale is a small town in the Waitomo District. It is on State Highway 30, approximately southeast of Te Kuiti. History Coal township Coal was discovered in the area in 1931, and a mine was built at the town's present location. In 1940 the government bought the mine and created the township of Benneydale. Its name is a portmanteau of the undersecretary of mines at the time (Matt Benney) and the mine superintendent (Tom Dale). It was the only town in the King Country that does not have a Māori name. At its peak the town had a population of 2000 with a butchery, bakery and picture theatre. There were jobs in the coal mine until the early 1990s, but like many other rural areas in New Zealand the town has slowly declined. Modern history Bush United is the town's local rugby union club, the clubhouse was built at Pureora in 1960 and was moved to Benneydale. The 1965 Wellington City mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year. In 1965, elections were held for the Mayor of Wellington plus other local government positions including fifteen city councillors.
